So years ago before I met DH I wanted to use the name Carson. It was one of my last names. He thinks that it would be bad for a girl cause the name has "son" in it. So I would love to hear suggestions. boy, girl or either. Thanks for your help.
I've never been a big fan of boyish names (well, some, not all) for girls because eventually kids want to know what their name means (I sure did, at least), and finding it it means "son of x" isn't the best for a girl to say the least.
That being said, its pretty common to do (Madison is the most common). My niece is Mackenzie. But...her name means "son of Kenneth" in Scottish. :-( Needless to say, she's cute, but I'm not a huge fan of her name, even though I know its popular. As her Mom likes to joke, "Thank God she isn't butch or chunky..." then the name becomes even less flattering.
If you are meanings focused I would keep that in mind. Carson is adorable for a little boy, IMO.
If I knew that a friend was having a girl, then found out they named their baby Carson, I would say "What? ?I thought they were having a girl? Were the ultrasounds wrong?". ?I like it for a boy, but not for a girl.

Since its a family name I think it works for either a girl or a boy -- anyone who knows your last name won't be confused as to where it came from. For that same reason, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to change the spelling. If you are really worried about it for a girl, I'd make it the middle name.
My friend named her daughter Karson (come to think of it - all of her daughters have unisex names - Jordan and Avery). So maybe playing with the spelling would make your DH think it's more feminine.
