Awake at 'bedtime?' (6 weeker)

I think it is just her age and she will learn as she grows, but.. every day my DD is WIDE AWAKE after the feeding when we put her down in the crib.  She has various alert and sound sleepy times during the day between feedings and they change every day.  But when we are trying to signal sleepytime for the night, she is consistently wide awake.

We keep the nursery mostly dark, play soft music, change her into a sleep sack before the last feeding... and usually end up giving her a pacifier which we then spend the 3 hours in between feedings replacing.  We tried doing a bath bottle bed but she hates the bath still and so it just gets her all riled up.  I BF during the day and we bottle feed at night, but it makes no difference if the last feeding is BF or a bottle, she is still wide awake either way.  'Soothing seahorse' does nothing.  Sometimes she will sleep in the swing, sometimes not.  The only thing that consistently works is sleeping on my husband's chest which he obviously cannot do all night!

Should we not be putting her down if she is that wide awake?  If not, how do we begin any semblance of a 'bedtime' and differentiate between daytime and nighttime?  Or is it still too early for me to be worrying about this?

  • It may still be too early.  How much is she sleeping during the day?  I've had some luck with waking DS for feedings during the day and letting him sleep until he wakes up at night.

  • My little guy was doing great.. we "thought" we had a routine. We did bath time at 7pm, followed by a bottle and then he would fall asleep during feeding, usually asleep between 8 or 9.  After visiting the family on Thanksgiving and not doing the usual routine he now stays awake past his bedtime.  On Thursday he fell asleep around 11:30, Friday the same, Saturday around 10:30 and yesterday I finally got him to sleep at 9:30. So, I hope he get's back to his usual schedule soon.

Good Luck , you are not alone Smile

  • We have the same issue. No matter what we do, LO just doesn't really fall asleep until 12 or 1, though he will sleep for at least 3-4 hours after that point.

Last night I tried "bedtime" beginning about 7:30, with a change, swaddle, feeding, books... he seemed sleepy, and I tried putting him to bed twice, but no luck. He would sleep about 20 minutes and then be up again. I think part of the problem is he's really gassy at that time of night, and the pains wake him up if he's not in a deep sleep.

  • same.  I wish I could make "bedtime" 7 or 8pm, but he likes staying up til 11.  But, he has been letting me sleep til 8Am, which is good.  I just keep trying.
  • It must be the age..my Lo will sleep from 6pm until 10 or 11 and then be up until 12 or 1. I don't know how to change this!
