Baby items you DONT use?

My sister has given me a list of her "must have" activity items to register for- doorway jumper, bouncer, swing (travel size so you can take with you), entertainment mat, exersaucer.

She's also got a front carrier and a framed back carrier.  I'm not sure I'd use a carrier at all, but DH might?

She's already given us a little bathtub (which I don't think we'll use) and a pack'n'play.

Any items that you think were a wash/waste?

  • Would love input on this one too! ;)
  • I love the Baby Bjorn, which I think is what you mean by a front carrier - I used mine all the time for the first 8 months or so...... It was a must have for me for grocery shopping.  We were given a framed back carrier but have never used it.  I had a sling but never used it, opted for Bjorn instead.  Our doorways are too small so the doorway jumper didn't work..... I bought one and we used it maybe twice.

Couldn't have survived without the exersaucer,  at 11 months, we still use it often.

Never got a travel swing but used the pack n play often.....  Not only for travel but he slept in it during the day the first few months, we had it set up in our living room.

Oh and activity mat we never used, Will didn't like it but I hear some babies love it.

  • For us, the must haves as a newborn were a swing (we did not have a travel one), a bouncy seat (a Boppy one at first, then a FP Aquarium one once she got bigger), and an activity mat. Holly loved that thing as a newborn. She still plays with the toys on it. We're also still using the swing on a regular basis, but I think a lot of babies lose interest before Holly's age, or don't like it at all.

Everyone else says that a Boppy is a must have, but honestly, we haven't used ours much, even when I was BFing. I'm glad I have it, for the few times I've used it, but if I had it to do over, I'd try to get one off of CL or at a consigment sale, etc.  Same goes with the Bumbo. We used it when she first started eating solids before she was in the highchair, and for cute photo ops before she could sit up, but that's about it.

Carriers are another thing that just depends on the baby. We have a Bjorn, and we use it at the beach, and some other times, but Holly has primarily been a stroller baby. Some people can't live without their carriers though. The frame backpack carriers have always looked cumbersome to be.

I found the bathtub to be a must--Holly used hers until she was about 7-8 months old, then we just moved her to the regular tub. Not sure how I would have bathed her without it! A pack-n-play is a must, IMO.

We had a Jumperoo, not a doorway bouncer. It takes up quite a bit of room, but Holly loved it. I also found that the Snap 'N Go stroller frame to go with the infant seat was a must, but there are differing opinions on that as well.

    HTH!

  • This is one of those things you'll get a hundred different opinions from a hundred different people. Unfortunately, it really just depends on you and your baby. But I'll give you my thoughts for what they're worth. The activity mat, bouncer, and boppy were must haves for us. We also had a jumperoo that we couldn't have lived without. I have a swing, but Eli never cared for it. I also never liked my sling, but I did like my carrier. As far as the bumbo, we used it and liked it fine, but I wouldn't say it's a must have. We got a lot of use out of the bathtub too. I'm not sure how you plan on bathing her, but we needed the baby tub. The pack n play was a must for us too. We used it as a basinette for the first few months, and still use it when we travel. Eli slept in it just this weekend as a matter of fact. We've definitely gotten our money's worth out of it.

  • We used or still use everything you mentioned except that we didn't have a bathtub but a little cradle instead and still use that actually.  We have the front to back carrier and still use that too.  We use all the activity items you listed.  We love the boppy.  It's great for bfing, but also great to prop your tiny baby up on or to serve as a little cushion for your "almost" unassisted sitter.  The baby item that I thought we'd love was the bumbo and it's been a bust.  We used it some when she was smaller, but now it's just taking up space.  We took it with us over our T-giving travels and she stayed in for probably a combo of 5 minutes over the whole long weekend.  We won't be traveling with it again esp since it takes up so much space.  You'll find that your baby might love things you thought would be a waste and dislike things you thought were worthwhile purchases.  It's kind of a guessing game really.

  • We couldn't live without the swing, exersaucer, bouncer, activity mat, bathtub and PNP.  We didn't really get much use out of the jumperoo -- she just never took to it.  Like Mikey said, it really will depend on your baby and what your LO likes.

  • It will really just depend on you, your baby, and your lifestyle.

Must haves for us on the list for us was the activity mat, the boppy and the infant tub for when my son was first born. We didn't/don't really use or PNP much except for a downstairs changing station, which we're going to put away soon. I know some people use the PNP the first few months in place of a bassinet though, so if that's your plan it should probably be on your "must have" list.

As far as carriers go, we liked the Moby for when he was very little, but now we've switched to an Ergo and I wish I'd had it from the beginning. It can be used as a front carrier, back carrier, and hip carrier from infant to practically toddler size. Definitely worth the $ to us.
