This is my friend's dad's name and it's pronounced Terry. I'm pretty sure it's French.

It's okay. Not really my style, and will probably be misspelled/mispronounced, but I don't hate it.

  • NMS and I agree about it not getting pronounced the right way.

Yes, it is. FAIL on my part. I am fluent in French.....

It will get mispronounced a lot.

  • I don't like it.
  • NMS.  One of those names that's a little too unusual, which will cause it to be constantly misspelled and/or mispronounced.

  • I like how it looks visually, and if "theory" wasn't a word I think I'd like it as a name too, but I would always think of the word "theory" so I couldn't use it.

  • A guy i work with, his last name is Thierry, pronounced "theory". I had never heard it before him but liked it.
  • I actually like the name visually, but would never, ever use it because a) I can't stand Terry and b) it would never be pronounced/spelled correctly.

    This.

We want a French name for our LO (because we're French) but this is one that no English-speaker will get right away.  So, unless you're living in France or Quebec, I would pass it up for other, easier, French names.

  • Are you French? If not, it seems kind of weird.
  • Don't. Just don't.

  • I agree with other posters--unless you have some strong French heritage that is evident in your last name, etc., then Thierry just looks like you're trying too hard for something "different."
