Trying to Get Pregnant

Ulcerative Colitis/Crohns and Pregnancy?

Does anyone here have UC or Crohns?  We are TTC#1 and I have concerns about being pregnant with UC.

Thanks!

  • Have you spoken to your GI about it yet?  I'm sure s/he will have a wealth of information for you.  None of the literature I've read has said that you shouldn't get PG, but there are things to consider like your medication.  I don't know that much about UC, but from what I do know, the diseases are largely similar.

I'm pretty sure that my Crohns has had something to do with it taking us so long to get PG (in cycle 8 now).  As my doctor says, the human body is smart - smarter than we are sometimes!  It knows when you're too sick to carry a baby.  I've had a rough summer, but am feeling a ton better now, so fingers crossed that our turn is coming soon!

I'd really recommend having a long convo with your GI, and if s/he feels its necessary (mine does), s/he''ll refer you to a high risk OB.

  • I briefly mentioned pregnancy to my GI five months ago during a check up.  He indicated that it is safe to get pregnant with UC, but listed some precautions and provided literature.  I suppose that the waiting game has made me impatient!  I am also wondering if UC has affected my ability to conceive. I also have a fantastic OB, who communicates well with my GI.

You are right - one thing he mentioned was that it is easier to become pregnant during a time of "remission".  I have been feeling much better lately.  I know my body is smart enough to know when I am too stressed to conceive.

I hope your turn comes soon!  Best wishes!

  • At my yearly a couple weeks ago I brought up my diagnosis of Crohns and that we want to TTC. She said to go for it since I was not in flare. I would be automatically "high risk" bc of the label Crohns, even if I am doing good, but if all went well I would just see a high risk dr once to check things. Her main concern with me was my fissure. There is a good chance that I would have a C-Section unless I can get it to heal somehow. Good Luck!

  • Yup, I've been told that due to where my disease resides, I'll be almost certainly having a c-section b/c any damage to the vaginal/perineum area just won't heal the way a healthy woman's would.

Good luck to both of you - there are tons of success stories out there, and I'm sure we'll be among them soon!
