I was washing DS in Johnson & Johnson's Head to Toe and finishing with Aveeno Baby but he's been breaking out in a facial rash afterwards and also having a lot of flaking off his scalp. I did rub baby oil in his scalp before his bath but it doesn't seem to help. I put hydrocortisone ointment on his rash, which does seem to work but after bathing with the J&J, he breaks out again. Any suggestions what else to try?

Re: Remedies for facial rash, cradle cap, and what shampoos?
We can't use J&J products for this very reason. We use Aveeno baby and he does great. You have to wash the hair frequently. DS's got worse before it got better. Now it comes back randomly (usually when his hair gets real oily).
We use Baby Magic for his hair because I like his hair to smell good.
Doesn't bother him at all, even for baths.
tthis stuff is awesome and works perfect. It cleared one of my LOs up in one use. Oh and it smells soooo good.

Maybe try something from the California Baby line. They have excellent products. We use this Super Sensitive body wash/shampoo and love it. Here is their website: https://www.californiababy.com. Target and BRU both carry California Baby products.
As far as cradle cap, here is what worked for DS2. For 3 nights in a row, at bathtime I put vegetable oil on his head. I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then I scraped his head with my fingernails. Sounds super gross, but it worked. I had tried using a comb, brush, dry rag, etc, but my fingernails were the only thing that actually scraped all the dry skin off. DS wasn't bothered by it at all. After 3 days, the cradle cap was gone and so far it hasn't come back.
Steer clear of J&J products. We use homemade soap that has no fragrance or dyes (DD has eczema). Luckily we have a friend who is a chemist and makes soap as an extra income.
I just got DD's cradle cap cleared up. I use a baby comb (not brush) to comb out the scales. It works much better.
If the rash is dry skin, try a cream (not lotion) like Eucerin or Cetaphil at least twice a day.
Our doc finally wrote a script for smth stronger than hydrocortisone. We're using Triamcinolone...and OMG it worked so well I almost cried. My DD's skin is like baby skin again.
DD had this really bad...you can use olive oil to loosen the cradle cap-leave for about an hour-then wash out. You can also use any dandruff shampoo to wash out the cradle cap quicker-comb through the hair, this also makes it easier to not get it in the eyes.. DD is really sensitive and baby oil made it 100 times worse, so you may want to try using the olive oil.
Also, I was told hydrocortisone cream-even less than 1% is really strong for a baby. (DD has mild case of eczema) Dr. told me to only use for a few days, after that I had to stop treatment completely for a full week...I rarely use it b/c that kinda freaked me out, so watch out for that and ask your doctor.
Agreed! Mustela products are the best, it seems expensive but you need so little and it seems to last forever. They sell a Newborn started/gift set that is well worth the money and seems to be the best deal.
I'm a pediatric dermatology PA at a children's hospital - we NEVER use Triamcinolone on the face...steroids can thin the skin and cause other problems, especially on skin where there is a lot of subcutaneous fat, like cheeks. I usually prescribe Aclometasone or Desonide for the face and scalp. Just a little FYI...
Never use J&J products - they contain an alcohol and fragrance that causes a lot of rashes. I recommend Cetaphil or CeraVe soaps and creams. Always creams, not lotions. Use OTC hydrocortisone 2x day for 2-3 weeks and if it's not better, see your pedi for a stronger Rx. Wash everyone's clothes in a perfume/dye free detergent like Dreft, All Free, Tide Free or Cheer Free. No bleach or fabric softeners.

Ooop, forgot the rest. For cradle cap, I recommend Head and Shoulders 2-3x week, then use olive oil on the scalp for about 15 min, then use a soft brush to peel off the flakes. If it's really bad, I prescribe a steroid cream.
