Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Intro & a few post-D&C Questions

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board and spent some time tonight reading through some recent posts. Everyone here sounds so nice and helpful, so I thought that I might ask a few questions for those of you who had a D&C.

My story is that I had a D&C about 10 days ago. Our baby should have been about 11 weeks, but instead the ultrasound showed the baby stopped growing at around 7 weeks. I had some light spotting (first brown, then red) which prompted my appt and u/s. Although we had seen a heartbeat a few weeks prior, the due date from the u/s didn't make sense. The baby seemed to be off by about 2 weeks - it was younger/smaller than it should have been. So - when I got the news that we had lost the baby, it may not have been as much of a surprise as it would have been otherwise. We are still terribly sad and feel its loss, but as a friend noticed and shared with me recently - we just knew something wasn't right.

When the doctor gave me my options, a D&C seemed like the best approach. Although we asked, she said that the cause likely had to do with the chromosomes - this causes most miscarriages. We didn't know to ask for testing and therefore didn't. Was anyone surprised by being given test results at the post-op appt? I'm wondering now if perhaps she was going to have it tested and just didn't mention it at the time... I had a dream a few days after the procedure in which I was asked by the doctor if I would like to know its gender and I didn't. However, I would love to know if there was an actual medical reason behind the loss.

After the D&C, I continued to bleed for almost a full week. I experienced some bad cramps, just like those from a menstrual cycle. I also noticed that I have a strange pinching sensation somewhere near my uterus. Has anyone else felt any sensation there after a D&C? After reading some posts about scarring, I'm just wondering if something could have happened during the surgery. I had the suction kind of procedure, and this sensation began a few days later.

I am also wondering if anyone on this board suffers from endometriosis. Last year, I started to experience severe pain when I would go to the bathroom (#2) and was diagnosed (without surgery, so not confirmed) with endometriosis. A few days after the D&C, I noticed that this same pain seems to have migrated, but very similar in nature. Several doctors told me that my endometriosis might get better after pregnancy, so I'm confused because I didn't expect it to get worse. I would love to hear from anyone who has had endometriosis and experienced a miscarriage/D&C. Was the pain different/worse? When did it appear/disappear?

Thank you in advance for any insight that you can share. This is my first pregnancy and don't have my follow up appt for another week. Wishing everyone all the best as you go through this difficult time, especially during the holiday season.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad that you found the wonderful ladies here though.

I had my D&C a little over a week ago.  I just stopped bleeding yesterday.  I have had a strange pinching/sharp feeling on my left side on occasion.  It was way worse for the first few days after the D&C but I have only felt it a few times since.  It's on my list of things to ask about at my appt this Thursday.  I had honestly never even thought about scarring, but figured that something had been attached in that area or that my ovary was freaking out. (I know, I'm terrible at self-diagnosis!)

I don't have endometriosis, so I can't help you there.  I'll be sure to let you know what my Dr. says about the side pain after my appt.

  • I don't really have any advice, but I'm very sorry for your loss.
