Beco v. Pikkolo v. Ergo?

We did a bjorn with DS, and I would prefer a front to back sling this time around as well as one that allows me to carry LO in a cradle type position as a newborn.  We can really only afford to purchase one sling and since DH has repeatedly said he refuses to wear a ring sling or Moby style wrap, I've been shopping the above mentioned carriers.  Any thoughts on these from you seasoned baby wearers??

I need as much back support as I can get, and we live in hot and humid south Texas so fabric breathability is very important.  I'd prefer a carrier that allowed LO to face out when being carried at the front, but I'd settle for a carrier that had a hip carry option (which I'm not sure the Beco has..).

Any thoughts are much appreciated!  TIA!

Re: Beco v. Pikkolo v. Ergo?

  • I asked a similar question here recently about choosing a carrier.  I haven't had an opportunity to try any of them on (I live on a small island), but I ordered a Pikkolo based on some of the same criteria you mentioned...

    a) I live in a hot climate too and Pikkolo was the only SSC that didn't require an infant insert which I hear is pretty hot.  I don't know if it allows cradle carry though...

    b) Can be worn forward facing as well as hip and back.

    c) Can be used to carry either my big baby or my little baby.

    d) DH and I can share it.

I know in the city that I'm from many of the stores have a demo day once a week where you can try stuff on and see what works- maybe you can check out that option where you live.

  • Ergo Sport? Lightweight, breathable fabric. I think it's the most "manly" option if your DH is anything like mine :) As for facing out - it's not very popular in the baby-wearing community because it is generally less comfy for baby and wearer. So I personally wouldn't let that be a deal-breaker. Lots of us find back carries to be a good compromise - LO can still see the world and everyone is comfy and LO can tune out and rest on your shoulder if they need to. GL!

  • Just to add to Fred's suggestions; Moby's are on ebay all the time for next to nothing.  I got mine for $25, shipping included.  The only thing I wish is that I had gotten it sooner as it would have been great in the first few weeks.
