I am thinking about uses cd, I was just wondering how it all really works? My mom and MIL and grandmother always bring up a diaper pall and how gross it was. Do you have to still do this with them and how easy are they to clean?
Also what brand do you use, how much do you like them?
Re: CD users?
We absolutely love it! we use basic prefolds and thirsties covers, we have 36 prefolds and 6 covers and do laundry 3 times a week. We have not bought a single box of diapers.
There are so many ways to do it but my DH and I love the basic prefold with cover way because we only use two covers a day we just interchange them with every change to ensure they are dry.
We bought some all in ones and pocket diapers but have never touched them because you can only use them once and it just doesnt make sense to me because they are so expensive and to use them you have to have a big stash (which we dont).
my LO gets only breastmilk so its very easy b/c the poop is water soluble so it all comes off in a cold rinse.
We use a trashcan with a lid not a diaper pail and we put a trash bag in it. Once its time to wash I just dump them in the washer and do a cold rinse then add a LITTLE bit of detergent and do a warm wash with a second rinse at the end. Then we dry them on low heat and once in a while let them dry in the sun to bleach them.
Until LO gets solid foods this is all we have to do but once his food changes you have to spray the poop off into the toilet which they actually make a sprayer that hooks onto the back of your toilet.
It's super easy. We have this diaper pail, w/ 2 planet wise pail liners. Dump the diapers in the wash, throw the wetbag in too. Easy peasy. There's no need to fill the pail w/ water - in fact it's not recommended because it's stinky and dangerous.
There are specific washing instructions for CDs, but none of it is difficult.
I hope this blog post doesn't overwhelm you, it does have some good information:

I haven't started CDing yet, but have been absorbing information. It seems with newborn poo you don't really need to rinse the diapers, just put them in a bag, no soaking either. Then wash every 2-3 days using a cold rinse, hot wash, extra rinse using detergent that doesn't contain fabric softeners or brighteners. Many people start out with prefolds, which are the square/rectangle diapers you probably think of, and put a waterproof cover over that. But there are many other options as seen in the link above. We will be trying a variety, prefolds, fitteds, pockets, and AIOs.
Good luck!
