Mumps and Daycare

I just learned (via Facebook) that my DCP's 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with mumps yesterday.  She hasn't called me and said not to bring DD to daycare on Monday, but my "scientific research" on WebMD says, "Infected people can spread the virus 1 to 2 days before symptoms start and for 5 to 9 days after symptoms start."

I am going to give her a call tomorrow, but has anyone else had to deal with mumps?

Re: Mumps and Daycare

  • Huh.  Was the daughter vaccinated?  I would either call the on-call pedi tomorrow and ask for advice, or call in Monday morning to see what they say.

    I was also wondering this.

I hope there aren't any little babies in the daycare who are too young to be vaccinated.

This is exactly the reason why I think it is important for parents to vaccinate.

  • I am assuming that her daughter was vaccinated.  And all kids at the are required to be vaccinated by state health law.  DD had one MMR vaccine and she is the youngest at the daycare (20 months).

I naively assumed that mumps had gone the way of polio...

For the most part, they have. Polio and Mumps are both around, but so rare now because the vast majority of people are immunized. Even though vaccines do not always offer 100% protection, "herd immunity" takes over and even if there are a few kids here and there who cannot be immunized because of medical conditions, etc, the rest of the community still has their immunizations and it offers protection to everyone for the most part. But, so many parents are choosing NOT to vaccinate now that the herd immunity is weakening. There have been outbreaks of Polio in communities where vaccination rates have dropped in the last few years.

  • yes, emilie and 108-- just within the last 2 years there was a significant outbreak at local Wheaton College here in Chicagoland!

This is so scary to me, especially now with another baby on the way.  Also--there were all of those measles outbreaks in the Bronx this summer.  Yikes.
