Where is my milk??

I just got home from the hospital with my beautiful baby boy today. While in the hospital I was breast feeding no problem. I mean, I know its just colostrum, not milk yet but he was doing very well and pooping/peeing frequently. So I get home today and I fed him and it seemed like he was taking forever so I just pumped to check if anything was coming out. I got like nothing. Just a little bit. He is just 48 hours old now. I know I could still have a day or two until then but I am just wondering why I have like nothing coming out now. I am worried. I didn't want to give him formula for awhile but if I can't feed him what choice do I have?? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Re: Where is my milk??

  • Their tummys are very small and colostrum is all they need right now. My milk came in on day 4, but it can sometimes take up to 10 days I've heard. Just keep feeding him regularly. He's getting exactly what he needs!

  • Ditto to PP, their stomachs are the size of marbles right now, so they don't need much to satisfy their hunger. Just keep feeding as you have been and your milk will come in soon

This. Mine came in on the 4th day too

  • My milk came in yesterday on day 5. I had a c-section and the doctors told me that if you have a c-section it can cause your milk to come in later than normal. Try not to worry, it will come and when it does, you will definitely know it.

  • You  may have heard this before, but what you pump does not necessarily equal what LO is getting.  They are much more efficient at getting milk/colostrum out than the pump is.

And you mentioned it seemed like he was "taking forever." As hard as it can be, try and let him stay on the breast if he wants.  The more he is on your breast, the more your body will be stimulated to get things going.  I'm sure many women on here can tell you that they feel like LO is always on the breast, especially when they are very young.

I've been at it for three months now and I don't worry much anymore, but I definitely remember how nerve racking it was at the beginning - worrying that he wasn't getting enough.  Try to relax and let your body do it's thing! GL!

  • Thank you so much everyone! I really am just a nervous wreck. I just had visions of having to automatically switch to formula b/c I could not give him what he needs. I am just sooo in love with him and when I think that I could not give him something it scares me. But thanks again. I feel sooo reassured now :)
