I've never used people shampoo on my dogs. It may be a bit harsh, especially knowing mine lick and drink the water and such that they are being bathed in.

SILworks at a dog rescue and NEVER uses people shampoo on the animals. She uses regular dog shampoo on them or johnsons & johnsons head to toe baby wash on the little puppies

I've used baby shampoo on my dogs when we ran out of doggy shampoo. I wouldn't use it all the time since it's not the best thing for their coat but in a pinch I can't imagine it would hurt.
I use Pantene all the time for Rufus. Doesn't hurt him at all. In the winter however, I use doggy shampoo because it's easier on his skin in drier air.
Unless your normal shampoo is something like Burt's Bees that is sulfate and paraben free, I wouldn't risk it. Dogs can have super sensitive skin and sulfates in human shampoo can dry out their skin really fast.

It won't hurt the dog. But I wouldn't do it all the time. And ditto the blue Dawn dishsoap. Works wonders for killing fleas, but it will dry out their coat if you aren't careful.
I've heard that animals have a different pH to their skin and therefore have different needs than people do as far as shampoo goes. Its okay to use people shampoo in a pinch; it won't hurt them (as long as it doesn't get in their eyes or ears) but for regular use, you'll want to get a dog shampoo.

People shampoo is not so good for the dogs. It can dry out their skin and is not good for their coat. In a pinch, rescue orgs use dishsoap, like Dawn.
When we want a fresh smell for the boxer/lab/chow mix (he's got a mixed fur coat, part fluffy and part flat) we wipe him down with baby wipes.
