So in my ffc this morning I said that I accidentally slept through my alarm this morning and was 25 min late for work.. well I thought I was going to get an email from my boss when I started my second shift tonight lecturing me about being on time, but what I got instead was an email from my boss saying that because I was late this morning they are revoking all 8 hours of my holiday pay from thanksgiving!! I am BEYOND pissed!!! I have had perfect attendance the whole time I have worked this job, and aside from one day when I had to call in because Holden was sick and I needed to take him to the dr I have never been absent or tardy from work. I cant believe this... I was really counting on that extra cash for the holidays and just like that, its gone.
::only one and a half more years at this job Jen, only one and a half more years and you'll be done...::
Re: now THIS sucks!!!
Oh Jen, that sucks so bad! Can you talk to your boss? Maybe, uh, say you thought you were supposed to be starting a half-hour later, or explain there was an issue? Maybe point out how you are a very dedicated employee and have never been tardy and have had near perfect attendance?
tried that... and the response i got was that if they gave me holiday pay it wouldnt be fair to all the people who actually showed up on time for work in order to get the extra pay.
I don't get why they are docking your pay from YESTERDAY when today is not the holiday. I can see them docking you 30 minutes for today, or why not just dock you 30 minutes worth of holiday pay? Is there someone else you can talk to? Boo. I'll stick with Alaska on your behalf.
That is completely messed up. Would calling your hr help, isn't holiday pay a benefit, they may be able to work this out. You should just be docked the time you were late. I wouldn't think your boss would be able to take that away, I know at my work, he has nothing to do with our holiday pay, it's all sent off to corporate to process. If you work those days you get it, period!
Hope you can get this worked out.
that sucks
not a lawyer - but is it even legal for them to do that?
That's total BS. ?And it doesn't even sound legal to me. ?Sure - dock the pay for the 1/2 hour you missed. ?But taking away pay from a different day??
I think you should page our legal eagles on the main board and see what they have to say about it. ?Maybe they can at least give you an idea or some language to take back to your boss to fight it.?

Are you sure they can do that? I would be checking with HR on that one. That seems a bit harsh and uncalled for esepcially given your good attendence history.
I have seen it where someone is paid for a holiday and then if they don't show up at all the next day then the holiday pay is taken away. I've never seen this happen for being late.
The other employees would have no idea what you are paid (or should not). You should just be docked for the time you were away. Have you talked to HR? Is this scenario in the employee handbook? If not I don't think they can doc you. If it is in the handbook then there is nothing you can do.
I've seen it too, but when i've seen it the rule is that you have to work the working day before and after the holiday to rec. it, and i'm surprised being half an hour late would affect the pay.
Maybe you can talk to him coming from the perspective that you agree with him... "Of course i agree that i should not be paid for that half hour that i wasn't here. And i would understand if you revoked a half hour of overtime pay from yesterday. However, i have until this point had perfect, timely attendence and it seems rather harsh to revoke an entire day of holiday pay when i did in fact work a full shift the days before and after the holiday." Good luck!
Not only does it suck...I believe that its illegal. Go talk to your HR and also tell them you want to see company policies on this and that you will be going to talk to legal council. Even if you aren't it will make your HR look into the legality of it and think twice about that.
This! I don't know anything about labor laws in WA, but this can't be legal..in any state.
