i delivered at HUP and it was wonderful. dr. daphne goldberg was my doctor. she practices boutique style medicine where you have to pay a membership fee, but the service that comes with it is white glove! i wanted a vbac and my other practice wasn't totally on board, so i switched to daphne the week before the baby was due. totally different approach to medicine. no more 8 minute doctor appointments, i could call and email her without a 'gatekeeper'. there weren't 15 other women with appointments within' minutes of mine. i was able to feel like this was a special time in my life.
I HATED my delivery at HUP. I went natural and had back labor and the nurse refused to understand that I needed to walk, she kept trying to force me to stay on the monitors even though there was nothing wrong with LO or me! My MD went out on maternity leave right before I was due :-( so I had a stand in Dr. Memje, she was the WORST!
First, she was rough. Secondly, she didn't believe me when I said I needed to push (she thought he was really high up when he was just a long baby) and so by the time the broke the table down he was on his way out! Thirdly, I had a third degree tear and instead of a local anaestethic she was trying to stich me up right then and there. I ended up having to go to the OR and getting a damn epidural after all because she wouldn't try to work with me.
The place feels like sickness and I would NEVER go back. Pennsy is sooooo much better and their suites are so comfy (I work there but my doc was at HUP :-(). Try there.
i delivered at HUP and had a pretty good experience. I was there (on L&D) for 3 days (I was induced...) and saw 2 midwives (Christine Watts and Bridget Howard) plus a doc (Dr. Burkland). My c-section was done by Dr. Chan. All were great, as was one nurse (Robyn, I think).
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."

I delivered at HUP and it was a hel lhole. I would sooner have no more children than go back there. It was awful. I had a scheduled c-section. My doctors were from 5 Penn Tower and were great. I loved the practice. But the hospital stay was filthy, and they put me in a single room because they thought I had MRSA. Are you kidding me? I did not have it. They wouldn't feed me for a few days because of the c/s (I have heard this varies and was the least of my problems).
Regardless of how often I asked for my pain meds (which I was warned to ask for them before I needed them), they were always late and I was always in pain. The pediatrician was from the hospital and was the most unprofessional jerk ever. Ever. The food was awful. It was a joke. Thank God there is a 24/7 McDonald's.
It's been 14 months, so I don't recall specific details anymore, but it was just awful and disgusting. I have heard great things about Pennsylvania Hospital, so check there instead. HUP is a dirty, filthy, disorganized, nightmare.
