Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

What to expect after a D&C

Hi ladies.  I have a couple of questions for those of you that had a D&C. I am one week past my surgery.  I was 11 and a half weeks along, but my baby stopped growing at 8 and a half weeks.  I plan to call my doctor next week too but wanted to see what you experienced following your D&C.

1.  When is it ok to return to exercise?  I know I shouldn't swim, but what about stationary biking? My spotting has stopped and I feel energized again.

2.  How long did it take your period to return after your surgery?

3.  How long did you wait before TTC again?

4.  How long did you have pregnancy symptoms after your surgery?  I still feel bloated and am having minor cramps.

5.  What did you do at your post op appointment?  Mine isn't for another 2 weeks.. Thanks!

Re: What to expect after a D&C

  • 1. I was told I could go back to my normal routine 48 hours post D&E, except for sex.  I have heard others say they had to wait for weight lifting or bending twisting exercises until after their follow up.

    2. Nothing yet, but it has only been two weeks for me. My doctor told me 4-6 weeks, but not to worry unless it had been more than 8.

    3. We were told to wait two to three normal cycles.

    4. Mine had actually started tapering off before I had my D&E.

    5. My post op appointment was a stupid waste of time and has sent me on the search for a new doctor, so I will defer to others on this one. I hope yours is better than mine.

  • 1.  I was told I could return to light workouts 48 hours after, but no lifting or yoga for two weeks. No sex for two weeks as well.

    2.  First time - 28 days. This time - we'll see.

    3.  I was told 2-3 cycles, both times and by different docs.

    4.  Honestly, they went away very quickly for me. Basically when I woke up, I was no longer having m/s or the like.

    5.  The doc will check your cervix and uterus, for infection and swelling. That was it.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this.

  • Thanks!  I'm sorry your post op was such a disappointment.  I hope you find a doctor that gives you the attention you deserve.
  • 1. My doc said to hold off on any strenuous cardio until my post op, which was 13 days after my D&C.

    2.  I haven't had mine yet, I'll be 4 weeks post op on Tuesday.

    3. My doc said to wait 2 full cycles.

    4.  Everything but the bloating was gone by the time I woke up from surgery. Bloating was fully gone by 5 or so days after.

    5. 13 days after surgery.

  • I was told by 2 OB's and my GP that I only needed to wait one cycle before TTC.  I just had my second D&C (in one week) yesterday so don't really have an answer to the other question.

     Good luck!

  • I had my D&C on Tuesday and I am still in pain and extremely bloated.  I don't feel pregnant anymore and now that I think about it I think I stop feeling pregnant couple of weeks before my d&c.  I was 11 weeks and 4 days pregnant when I started spotting and went to ER.  How do you know your baby stopped growing at 8 1/2 weeks?

I had an ultrasound at 10 weeks and 5 days and my baby only measured 18 mm.  When I got home I noticed that the ultrasound pic said the baby was 8 weeks and 2 days when I should've been 10 weeks and 5 days.  I called my doctor but she just said that she probably forgot to delete the info from the previous patient but now I know there was something wrong.

    I wish you the best!

  • 1.  I have been a total slacker about exercise, so I don't actually know the answer to this one.  However, a couple days after the procedure I felt okay to do more physical things.  I was on pelvic rest for 2 weeks.

    2.  This one requires a bit of an explanation, so excuse the length.  A few days short of 9 weeks post D&C, I had 4 days of very light spotting and intense cramps.  My doctor told me this was AF and that it can vary from person to person on how light or heavy it is.  Thirty days later, I had the same really bad cramps but no bleeding at all.  My doctor then put me on Prometrium to see if that would work.  She thought that my body was trying to have cycles but that my lining just wasn't building up.  That did the trick!  Now I'm waiting to see if I'm either PG again or will have an AF on my own.

    3.  We were told I needed to have one cycle on my own before TTC.  So, because of what I said above, we didn't start trying again until the AF that came along with the Prometrium.

    4.  Yes, I had pregnancy symptoms for a couple of weeks.  I had bloating, the enlarged breasts, having to pee all the time, that sort of thing.

    5.  At my post-op I met with the doctor that did the surgery.  She basically just went over the pathology report, asked how I was feeling, talked about next steps.  I think she was seeing how I was psychologically too and if I was ready to start trying again.  The doctor also did an internal exam to make sure things were okay.
