How do I know when to move to Stage 2 or 3 foods?

We're still on stage 1 and I'm thinking this isn't right.  He's 8.5 months.  He has 2 teeth now and crawls.  He's even pulling up and has done a little cruising but not super successfully.  He eats Puffs and Cheerios for snacks.

Re: How do I know when to move to Stage 2 or 3 foods?

  • We haven't moved to stage 3 yet, but we've used 1 and 2 for a while now.  I started w/ the stage 1 since they are generally single-ingredient foods, but they are SO liquidy (DD takes her cereal super thick, and these thin foods caused such a mess, I had to thicken them w/ cereal).  We moved to stage 2 right away - they are a little thicker and offer a few more flavors and ingredients to try.  We haven't tried stage 3, although I do have a few jars at home - they seem a little chunkier.  Plus, I'm still trying to give her the individual ingredients first - then will try them.

I'd think your LO is definitely ready for stage 2/3 - especially w/ the teeth and his cruising!  Have fun!

  • I agree - we didn't stay with stage 1 for long.  There wasn't a lot in terms of flavors, but once he got through all of those, we moved to stage 2 for interest :)

Sounds like you're ready for those, at least...

  • I think he is probably ready to move up. We are on stage two, but mostly table foods are what she eats now anyway. I don't even know if I will go to a stage 3 because I am thinking pretty soon she'll just eat what we eat. Other than trying to make sure she gets all her fruits and veggies, that is the only reason I use them.

  • Ditto--go ahead and try stage 2's. The only real difference is that they're bigger jars, a little less runny, and there is way more variety. Most stage 3's are really chunky (have noodles, rice, etc, in some of them, or small soft chunks of fruits/veggies) and a lot of people don't even bother with them since their DC's are on to table food by that point. Holly eats some, but she's mostly off purees now--just trying to finish up what we have left in the house! GL!

  • Yeah, he's definitely ready for Stage 2. We are just now moving to Stage 3.
