Tired of the CIO advice (vent)

My LO has pretty bad reflux - and wakes up a ton at night (last night every half hour). As always, people ask "Is he STTN?". When I say no, they are shocked. He is only 5 months old. He's getting switched to a new medicine soon (zantac helped a bit but not much), but I'm so tired of people telling me to let him CIO. He does take a long time to get to sleep and wakes up a lot, but if I know my child is in pain I just don't feel comfortable letting him cry when I know I can help soothe him. Since D can be a very fussy baby a lot of the time b/c of his reflux, people are so quick to assume I'm lacking in my parenting abilities somehow.

Re: Tired of the CIO advice (vent)

  • I'm sorry. It's the American way to expect babies to behave like tiny adults right from the get-go, and it's annoying to be told they should be STTN when you know better.

I know it's easier said than done, but just try to ignore it. I've also had luck with saying something like "actually, studies have shown than CIO can have a negative impact on a child's development", or something like that. Most people really don't know any better and are only reacting to what we've all be taught, so they'll clam it up if you provide some actual facts.

  • DS is almost 6 months and doesn't STTN. He's a happy baby and I'm a happy mommy. Anyone else with an opinion about my baby's sleep can shove it!

For complete strangers asking me if DS sttn, I always say yes. It's completely untrue but it sure skips the unwanted advice!

Honestly, this little lie will save you a lot of grief.

But really?  Most ADULTS don't sleep through the night.  Most of us wake up to pee, scratch, get a drink.  Children are no different.  They do need a little help, though.  Whereas adults don't.  (Although how many of us admit we don't love falling asleep alone when DH is out of town or out for a late night?  I'll raise my hand to that with no shame.)

And how about a 5 month baby with reflux issues?  They certainly need a hand.  Poor little things...

DD has only STTN start to finish about 20 times in her life.  (She turned 2 in August.)  Do I think she's an awful sleeper?  No.  I think she's normal.  She asks for help to pee.  She sometimes needs some reassurance when she wakes up a little scared and lonely.  It's not killing us.   When she woke up with the munchies a few times, I had to put my foot down, though.  I didn't want to be running an all night cafe.  ;)

Ditto.  I have never sttn myself and am a light sleeper.  I always wake up a ton, that is just me.  So why do I expect DS to sttn?!?

I get the same reaction sometimes as DS is just about 18 months and has sttn once.  I usually ignore it and if people get wierd I just say that CIO is not for us.  Although just lying might not be a bad idea!!

We had this exact conversation when DH casually mentioned CIO after one particularly awful night.  After that he realized that it wasn't the option and it's not the end of the world if T wakes up at night.

  • I'm sorry!  I hope they are switching him to Prevacid?  It worked a miracle for our daughter.

  • STTN is not a reflection of your parenting skills.  You meeting your baby's needs is a reflection of your parenting skills.

When someone asks me if my children sleep through the night?  I say, 'I'm not complaining' or 'They are sleeping appropriately for their age' and leave it at that.  I haven't had anyone probe deeper.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies. They are switching him to prevacid so hopefully it helps. I just feel so bad for my little guy.
