Trying to Get Pregnant

Explaining fertility to my 30 year old sister

... who has 2 kids

Her: "Don't you think you'll have less of a chance to get pregnant if you're charting and ONLY have sex when the chart tells you to? Shouldn't you have sex every day just incase??"

Me: Confused "Errr.... no...well, we will have sex more than just those few days, but charting will make my odds BETTER because I'll know when I'm ovulating. A person can only get pregnant around the time they're ovulating anyway..."

Her: Confused "Well then obviously some people ovulate more than others."

Me: Hmm "Nooooo actually every woman only ovulates once per cycle. If you're not ovulating you can't get pregnant. So, you have a small window of opportunity each month, and if you don't know when it is, you might miss it."

Her: "So you're telling me that the 2 times I got pregnant by accident, I just HAPPENED to have sex when I was ovulating?" *Challenging me with disbelief*

Me: "Yes."

Her: "Well why don't you just tell all your friends on your message board to have sex every day. Then they'll definitely get pregnant because they'll have sex when they ovulate. Duh."

Me: "Yeah, maybe..." Indifferent

Oh well, at least she's walked a way with a LITTLE more information then she had when she arrived LMAO!! And while I'm poking fun at her, a couple of months ago, I definitely would have been on HER side of this conversation. Oy.

Oh, and I forgot, at the end, I DID say, "Not everyone gets pregnant so easily.. some people try for a long time etc etc etc".. and she ended with, "Well then I guess I really am just Fertile Myrtle."

    Ick!

I love my sister. I really do.

I think I love your sister, too.  She really is adorably ignorant.  Some people are ignorant and jerky about it.

  • Sounds like some conversations I've had with my sister. She thinks abstaining on days 8-14 is going to keep her from getting KU again.

She's definitely not jerky about it.. she was truly surprised...and she admitted that she did know that some people had difficulty getting pregnant.

I'm still not sure she believes me.. she'll probably go and laugh at me the way I'm laughing at her with HER friends.

Zista, you're right, this type of misinfo is very common, and the more I think about it, the more it annoys the heck out of me. Why isn't real fertility information plastered all over the place the way info about birth control is???

This is the information that's most commonly accessed through teachers and even doctors. How sad is that?

Ha!!!!! Well, I feel a bit defensive since she's my sister, but she definitely has no knowledge of her monthly cycle. Unfortunately, that's a fairly common thing to be "dumb" about.

How did the women's lib movement miss this boat? Maybe we need to start a revolution. Wink

  • Yikes!  Wouldn't it be great if we ovulated more than one per cycle? Haha...

I think a lot of people are like your sister.  They have no idea it is not so easy!

At least she wasn't a total turd about it, insisting that she was right or something. And she learned something new today!

  • I have to stick up for the sister too.  Before I started TTC for DD when I was 31, I had no clue.  I honestly had no idea that there were only a few days a month that you could get pregnant.  I was kind of mad that sex ed/health class never spelled that out.  I wouldn't have been such a nervous nelly in college! ha ha!  I was shocked at how little I knew about my body.   Now, I think it is pretty fascinating.

  • Sounds a little like my sister...who got ku the first try with both her kids: "Why are you charting? Just buy digital opks and then have sex when they are positive!" "Um, I've been doing that, and it doesn't guarantee you will get pregnant - obviously" "Really? Oh, ok. Good luck". Thanks, really, just thanks. :p

  • That sounds similar to my sister! If I hadn't known about charting/watching CM when I got PG with my DD, I could be just as ignorant. We were very blessed to get PG with DD our first cycle trying with just me watching CM and having lots of sex.

  • Adorably ignorant... Too cute!
  • Yea it amazes me that my sister got pregnant her FIRST month of trying.. How does that happen. I also wonder how people who have had children don't understand the female reproductive system...
  • It must have felt really empowering to be able to explain all of that to her, though!

I had a similar conversation with a male co-worker of mine (don't know how we started talking about fertility in the first place) who told me that you can get pregnant ANY time except for when AF is here.  He gave me all of his reasons and told me that he knew all of this because his Mom is a Doctor -- she's an Anesthesiologist.  I politely and simply explained how it really works and he still did not believe me.  He said "oh, ok" which is his way of saying "we'll agree to disagree".  I was so fired up, but I just let it go.  Oh well.
