poll: Top load or front load washer?

Sorry about so many washer questions, but I really need to get a new washer and there are some good deals this weekend.  We have a front load now, but it has grown mold and smells sometimes.  Which can happen to all front loads.  So I am leaning towards a toplaod.

Which to you prefer and why?

Re: poll: Top load or front load washer?

  • We just bought a brand washer and dryer and I did tons of research on this. I decided against the frontload washer for the issues you mention (and I also like that you can add clothes a few minutes into the cycle with top loaders and you can't with many front loaders.)

We ended up getting the Whirlpool Cabrio set and I seriously LOVE them. The washer is 5.0 cubic feet and I can wash huge loads of laundry at once (for instance- all of mine, DH's and DS's dark or light clothes will fit into one load) saving me a ton of time. It's energy efficient, has a few great features, etc. It had great reviews from consumers online as well as consumer reports. I would highly recommend these!

ETA: I also saw your post about the Bravo and was going to say this there but it's gone now. :)
Every single consumer report I read online (not the actual Consumer Reports- the onine reviews from shoppers on Home Depot, Wal Mart, Lowes, etc.) were HORRIBLE for the Bravo. So much in fact that I decided to get the Cabrio. I am in love with my Cabrio.

  • i hate the mold on my front load, no matter what we do it comes back, I never remember having any mold with my top load or every really having to clean it. once we move and have a larger laundry room I will be going back to top load

The Cabrio is on my list of washers to check out tomorrow.  I can't decide between this one or the Maytag Bravos. Thanks for the review!

Thanks, yeah I DD the other post because I thought a poll would be better information.  I appreciate the information, I am going to check them both out, but I am leaning towards the Cabrio too!! Even more so now.

  • I have had the Frigidaire Affinity front load for 2+ years now and haven't ever have mold issues. I pph my front load... it can spin a load of towels so well that it takes 15 minutes on medium heat to dry them completely.

  • Special snowflake: I have one of each and like them both for different things.

The front loader is best for everyday laundry and large, bulk things like comforters and sleeping bags. Granted, our front loader is old and the absolute cheapest, bottom of the line front loader available. It's really not all that great but is fine for basic laundry.

The top loader is better for cloth diapers and for really dirty loads that I want to soak (ie: when I wash kitchen rags I let them soak in hot bleach water overnight.) I also use the top loader for dying things (I'm a dying freak- it's my crafty outlet.)

  • topload, I was going to purchase a frontload but my dad who has his own repair service advised against it.  He thinks they're pieces of crap... that's all he would say, lol.  So sorry I can't back it up with facts but I trust my dad :)
  • Love Love Love my LG Tromm front loader washer. We run the clean cycle every few weeks and leave it open for a few hours after a wash and we have had zero mold issues. We had it 2+ years.

You shouldn't have to do this with a washing machine for goodness sakes!

  • we have the LG front load washer, and the repairman who came out (b/c i freaked out and thought it was broken... it wasn't) said that once a month, you should run a cycle of just bleach to clean out the tub.  Also, tide sells front load machine tub washers.  It cleans out the smell and everything!  If once a week you run dry cloth along the inside portion where the seal is (where water gets trapped,) it'll help eliminate the smell and also keep the mold at bay.  The clorox thing works wonders, too. We do this and have had the machine for 6 months and havent' had any problems or smells yet.

actually, because front loads have a really strong water seal, any residual water from any cycle can just stay in the bottom.  It happens in top loads, too, however, since the water seal is not tight (or pretty much non existant... it's not necessary in a top loads) itallowes the water to evaporate.  front loads don't.

btw, i LOVE my front loads... we've actually saved $20 on EVERY electricity bill since purchasing them AND we've saved over a 2/3 in water on our quarterly bill.

What brand do you have? I have a Maytag front load, and while there's some detergent residue on the glass, we use a washing machine cleaner and it usually cleans everything right off. The cleaner can be found at the grocery store, same section as the detergent.

Have you called customer service about this? That doesn't sound like the norm.
