2nd Trimester

Is anyone else's OB pushing for the h1n1 shot?

I feel like I was made to be a bad person for not wanting the shot at the doctor's yesterday. I'm 28 weeks and I've never gotten the flu or a flu shot and just don't feel comfortable getting it. He told me 10% of preg. women who get the flu die, but that sounded awfully high to me and kept asking why I didn't want it-I just don't!

Re: Is anyone else's OB pushing for the h1n1 shot?

  • Don't get it if you aren't comfortable. I was the same as you- uncomfortable about getting either shot because I have never gotten a flu shot before. I weighed the pros and cons (for me) and decided I wanted both shots. It's up to you! Your OB probably isn't going to chase you down and stick you.

  • Mine hasn't even touched the subject, but I'm not comfortable getting it either.

  • My MW and GP both said they strongly encouraged me to get it, but it was ultimately my decision. I am not getting the shot.
  • I had the same issue with my OB he actually yelled at me and my Fiance was starting to get irritated, I spent the evening stressing HUGE about this whole thing I asked friends there opinion and what I got was this most of them said that they are NOT getting it or giving it to there children. However a lot of them said if they were preggers that they probably would, the reason for getting it when your pregnant is because if you do happen to get sick you won't die from the flu but your chances of getting pneuomia and having VERY serious complications skyrocket which is scary because even healthy people who get pneuomia have a difficult time recovering and being pregnant really complicates it. I didn't want the shot but I ended up caving and getting the one specifically for pregnant women with no adjuvants and no boosters. I was absolutely terrified but I have been fine and baby is fine too!!
  • My OB told me it was my decision, but he didn't think that I should get the regular flu shot or h1n1. He never incourages otherwise healthy pregnant women to get the flu shot.
  • my dr hasbeen pushing it too! Every time i go in i go over it with him that i do not want it. its getting a little ridiculous! I work in the ER!! Ive been exposed numerous times to people who tested positive for the H1N1 and i didnt get sick so i dont see the reason behind getting the shot! and that is exactly what i told him but he still kept pushing! Im gonna get ugly next appointment if he tries to push it again!

  • My OB and "second opinion" both said absolutely do not get the H1N1. I already wasn't up for getting it in the first place, both my docs telling me not to set it in stone for me. I've never had the regular flu shot before and I'm not about to start now.
  • My Ob did until I told her I was allergic to eggs....that made her stop..

  • Mine mentioned it once, and hasn't brought it up since.  I think he'll probably bring it up again at my next appointment.  I'm still undecided.
  • My MW strongly suggested it, as did my family practitioner. I wasn't planning on getting it, but my FP changed my mind. He is DD's pedi and at her last appt. I asked him about it for her and also told him that I was unsure for myself, being pregnant. We use an alternate vaccine schedule and he has NEVER asked me to give her a vaccine we declined. But I could tell he really, really wanted me to get it, both for myself and for DD. I chose him as a doctor because I respect and trust his opinions. I know he stays up to date on the latest information and never just gives me the standard "this is what I'm supposed to say because I'm a doctor" answer. He is very into natural parenting and doesn't push drugs he doesn't think are necessary. So knowing him, the fact that he was pushing it meant something to me.
  • Both my OB and regular practioner strongly suggested it.  Once they received the shipment in I went in to get it.  About 4 days later I did get a cold, it was mild lasted about 3 days but glad I did get it.  Bottom line you can get every one's input, and different suggestions from physicians but you will have to do what you feel is right.
  • My doctor only mentioned it once, and that was bc I brought it up to her. I'm glad she's not asking though.
  • Hey, it's your choice. But you should know that the flu shot ( both of them) is not linked to maternal or fetal demise. The flu is. That is the point your OB is trying to make.

  • Mine strongly encouraged me to get it, and I did, but it was my decision.  I work around a higher risk group and don't want to take any chances...because a disproportional number of pregnant women who get the H1N1 flu, do die, and in my opinion the risk of the shot is way less than the risk of getting H1N1, and of then having complications.

Umm.. this.  Also, the fact that you have never gotten a flu shot or the flu before doesn't protect you from getting the flu this season.

    Just sayin'

  • Um.... well yesterday they offered it to me immediately when I signed in. I declined and they didn't really hassle me about it. My grandmother the pregnancy police is the one hounding me about it. But I have made up my mind and my husband agrees. So, go with how you feel.

  • My midwife and family doctor did not recommend that I get it (they are not from the same practice).  But I had already knew I wasn't going to get it.  I can tell you this- I know more than 10% of pregnant women die in car accidents but this doesn't prevent anyone from being in a car.  I truly think its really blown out of proportion.  I really like the articles on Mothering.com they are very informative and non-biased.
  • My Dr was actually against me getting the H1N1 shot but did want me to get the regular flu shot, so that is what I did.  Her reasoning against the H1N1 was that I was not a high risk candidate for being exposed to it.  She was only having her Pregnant Patients who worked around children or in the medical field get it.

  • My doc said they are recommending it, but since I'm otherwise healthy, I should be okay with gargling salt water!!! I was so happy!!! I told her that I wasn't going to get it, so I asked for some home remedies to keep the flu away. Everyone at work has been sick, except me. I haven't even gotten a cold or anything! YAY!!!

  • Seriously, wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? It's not a big deal to get it.
  • No. My dr does not rec either flu shot.

  • I feel the same way. I chose not to get it but one of the MW in my practice made me feel like I was the most horrible person for not getting it. I understand she needs to give me her medical opinion but the way she went about it (yelling "PREGNANT WOMEN ARE DYING" in my face) is not the way to go about it in my opinion.

This and it's his/her job to recommendations in the patients' best interests. Pregnant women are listed as the most at risk group for a reason.

  • I am a nurse....I got it because I work in a children's hospital that has been seeing over 500 cases of H1N1 a week!!!  If you are not exposed to school age kids I wouldn't worry.  If you are.....I would get it.  I live near a city and we have had several pregnant deaths!!
  • My neither of the OB's I've seen in the practice I go to have even mentioned it, which is fine with me. No one in my family is getting it. I'm just not convinced it's safe. My 6 year old has an incredible immune system and I work from home so that our 1 year old doesn't go to daycare. I'm a total germophobe on top of that, so I'm hopeful that we'll be fine. Do what you feel is best for you even if your doc is pressuring you to do otherwise.
