Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

help! my 18mon old spits out all her food...

my usually good eater started daycare a month ago and since has become more and more of a nightmare to feed. i always made her food from scratch and never gave her sugary foods.  at daycare they provide meals for the kids and slowly her teacher has informed me that my dd was eating less and less of the food i was sending for her to eat (her reasoning being that it's not what the other kids were eating).  so now i don't send anything for her.  starting about a week ago she started putting food in her mouth and chewing it up and then letting it fall out of her mouth.  within the last couple of days she has gone from asking for food, eating a bite and then taking a bite and spitting it out...eating a bite and then spitting out the next 2 and so on (so she isn't full and she does like the food)...today she only ate for the whole day what she would eat probably normally eat in just one sitting.  ANY ideas what to do or why this might be happening??

oh, i should add that within the last month she went from teething with her eye teeth to now teething for her stomach teeth.

Re: help! my 18mon old spits out all her food...

  • DS is going through one of these phases now.  He went through a phase from 15-17 months when getting him to eat was like pulling teeth.  We are healthy eaters.  We always offer a meat, veggie, a starch, and fruit.  Right now he is living on cheese, fruit, and veggies and not much of it.  I really think his problem is that he gets bored with his food and would rather be doing something else rather than eating.  Something that has worked for us is to put ketsup or ranch dressing on his plate and let him dip his food in it. DS likes to taste his food and spit it out too.  It drives me crazy, it's like he's trying it and hoping there is something else better to eat.  DS also likes to graze througout the day rather than sit down for 3 meals.  It's not what I want, but it gets him to eat.  I know how frustrating this is!  Good luck!

  • The only way DD will eat is w/ a fork. She stabs the food, brings it to her face than puts the food in her mouth w/ her free hand.

She doesn't like meat so much. Only chicken nuggets. She will eat veggies & fruit like no buddies business though.

Does your LO drink milk? If so how much? I know that some days DD will drink a ton of milk & than not want her food as much.

  • She usually only gets about 10-14 oz in the morning when she first wakes up...that's actually the only thing I can count on her consuming...that and a fruit/veggie smoothie I make her with lunch. what has me the most concerned I think is that she isn't eating even when I know it's been hours since she ate anything.  Is this just yet another phase that will pass on its own and I have to just take deep breaths?
