Babies on the Brain

My turkey is still frozen solid.

OMG HELP.

It needs to go into the crockpot in about 12 hours and there is NO WAY it will thaw that much in the fridge between now and then.

What do I do?

ETA: I followed the directions that said to give it 24-48 hours to thaw and took it out of the freezer early yesterday morning.  GAH!

  • Immerse in cold (not warm) water. Change frequently as water warms up.

  • PS: Do you have a cooler? That would be the easiest place to do it.
  • I do have a cooler, but my sink is empty and I'd actually rather do it there...it will make changing the water easy.  My cooler doesn't have one of those spout things to empty water when ice melts.

I'm gonna go put it in now.

  • Most of the time it will not thaw in the fridge unless you have like 5 days for it to thaw.

Do the water thing and you will be fine!

Ah good. I suggested the cooler in case your sink wouldn't fit it. But that's much better!

  • I have done the water trick every time. The fridge never works. Just make sure it's completely thawed tonight and back in the fridge until the morning.

I am intrigued by cooking it in a crockpot. I've never seen it done like that - sounds great!

  • Oh, yeah Cathy, It's just a breast so it's not huge.  Although, it is 7 pounds so it's big for being a breast.

MrsV- The crockpot leaves the turkey SUPER moist and tender.  It also gives me a little leeway--we're going to MIL's for brunch tomorrow.  Cooking it in the crockpot won't force me home before we're ready just to cook the turkey.

  • To thaw a turkey in the fridge: 24 hours for every FOUR pounds of turkey.

To thaw in water: Change cool water every 30 minutes for every 2 -4lbs. I think. It's like 6 hours to thaw a 13-15 lb bird using this method.

  • Hm, the directions didn't say 24 hours for every four pounds, but even if it did it would be lying.  The breast was in the fridge for more like 36 hours before I realized it was still frozen solid--another 12 hours wouldn't have made much of a difference for it.  And since it's only 7 pounds, it should have been closer to thawed by then.

It seems to be going faster in the cold water.   It was so frozen I STILL haven't had to drain the water.
