Uh oh - my nanny just recommended Baby Wise...

She is not a mommy.  This was something that was recommended to her by a friend.  But those two words make me twitch.  YUCK!

  • Did you discuss it with her - That you'd rather her not practice it on your DC?

Not yet.  She just sent me a text like "oh - by the way - that book that my friend loves is called Baby Wise"

We have stuff about no CIO in our nanny contract, but I will discuss with her again.

  • ugh. Hopefully she didn't know what it was about.
  • Ugh.  That would make me nervous too.  I'm with the others and hoping she just didn't know.

  • I just wrote back and said that the book bashes Attachment Parenting and is not very supportive of breastfeeding.  She obviously felt bad.  But fredalina - you are right.  I think she was trying to be helpful since we are having a hard time with DS and sleep right now.  But perhaps she should have used Google first :)

  • It obviously sounds like she's never read it....just that a friend recommended it. She's just trying to be helpful I'm sure but I would casually mention you have heard of that book and it's not in line with how you would parent....

  • MIL asked me if I wanted her to send Babywise to me because she said one of her friends said it worked well for her.  Having absolutely no idea what it was (actually, I thought it was just a general infant care book), I was like, "Yeah, sure, why not?"  So when I skimmed through it that was enough for me.  I haven't touched it since.  I forgot to send it back with MIL when she was just down here visiting a couple weeks ago, lol.  I'll bring it back to her at Christmastime.

No!  Don't give it back!  She might give it to someone who will actually use it next!  lol.

I am usually very much against book burning.  This is one book I am willing to make an exception about.  BURN IT.

I'm a total book nut but I had to throw away the copy of BabyWise that a relative passed on to me.  I felt icky for even having it around (yes, I know that's dramatic!).

My MIL has sent me some Dobson books. Not even new ones- the old school ones that she and my FIL used when DH was growing up. I've debated reading them to see how bad they are and laugh.... but then I decided not to. Sometimes I think even reading stuff you don't agree with can put the thoughts into your head, KWIM?

  • Maybe it's a regional thing, but the only place I've ever heard about that book is on the nest/bump.  I feel like people post about it all the time, but I've never seen it, had it recommended to me, or even heard it mentioned IRL.

It's really popular around here. A lot of the churches have the Growing up God's Way program & Ezzo created/authored both. Babywise-type parenting advice is spouted off like gospel by practically everyone here.

  • Along the same line... the only sleep book I have heard about outside of The Bump is the Baby Whisperer.  Never heard of Ferber, Babywise, etc.  It seems that people pass down ideas of CIO, rice cereal in bottles at 4 months, weaning at exactly 6 months and having formula to help sleeping, spoiling a child by sleeping with it, etc. but they seem to get ideas from friends and family and not books.
