xp from 3-6: if you have a nanny...

do you offer her any paid time off? We're in the process of hiring a part-time nanny (about 26 hours/week) and we finally found one we really like who is getting a degree in early childhood education and has prior nanny experience.

I'm planning to offer her a competitive wage because I don't want her quitting in two months, and I'm wondering about some sick/vacation days as well. Partly because I think everyone deserves to have some paid time off, but also because I don't want her to come and watch DS if she's sick because she doesn't want to lose the pay.

Anyone do this? If so, how many days do you give them? Just wondering what the norm is.

  • When I was a nanny I got two paid weeks off a year. I could take a vacation, or use some of them as sick days. I usually took a week's paid vacation in the summer and saved the others for sick days, and then of course I took other vacation time during the holidays when the family would also be away for Christmas etc. visiting their family, and it wasn't paid.

  • When I was a full time nanny I received 3 weeks paid a year and sick days as needed.  I was salaried so it made all of that easier.  Also, if they traveled and I did not go with them I was expected to keep up the house rather than taking my vacation time during that period.

I went to part time with them once I was married and we just cut my benefits in half.

If you are thinking of doing a set salary and taking taxes out of her check there is a great company who will do the payroll and help you with these logistical questions.  PM me and I can get you there info if you are interested!

This. I took care of the house, bought groceries, watered plants, baked and cooked freezer meals, ran errands, etc while they were away.

  • Our nanny is paid hourly rather than salary.

She gets two weeks of paid vacation and 4 paid sick days.

She gets paid for federal holidays.

  • We do offer paid time off and holidays, but she is earning her paid time off, so she can use that time for sick time or personal time.  Our plan is to give her 3 days per quarter for a total of 12 days off by the end of the year.
