I'm starting to load up the registry and I'm doing some research on monitors. Do you really love the one you have? Let me know! Also, would a video monitor be that much better than a non-video monitor?
We have the basic Fisher Price Sounds N Lights Monitor and it's worked great for us. When we run it on battery the range doesn't seem to work as far. At home it's always plugged in, so that isn't really an issue. I would love a video monitor, but I don't feel it's really necessary. Lots of the Moms on here always share stories of watching LO on the monitor - I think it would be fun more than anything!
We started we just a lights and sound one but got the Summer handheld video one when she started sitting/standing in the crib. We love it and actually now have a second one that we will use once DD2 is in her crib.
We're on our 3rd set of FP Lights and Sound. They will just randomly stop working. I would have bought a different brand but all the others were either really expensive or really cheap.
We have the Sony Babycall. We love it and haven't had any trouble with it at all.
Seriously the best monitor ever. It is voice activated so you don't hear white noise the whole night. I have had to use other monitors at peoples houses and I couldn't sleep all night!

Another question: Do you recommend getting the dual receivers or does one seem to do the trick? I'm thinking since our house is 2 stories, 2 receivers might be nice.
I had a Sony Baby Call and really liked it until it had a meltdown. Seriously, it got so hot part of the cord melted. They sent me another one but after that I was nervous using it. Plus even though DD was a year old I felt the need to constantly go in and check on her which would wake her up sometimes, and to touch the monitor plug to make sure it wasn't burning up again. So I tried 2 different kinds of Summer video monitors and got too much static. Then I ordered a Levana Video monitor and LOVE it!
I know it's not "necessary," but I don't know how I would have gotten by without a video monitor. We have the Summer handheld one and I love it. We do have some issues with some static, but nothing terrible, IMO. We have another regular monitor (got for $10 at a consignment sale), and usually use that one for sound anyway.
I have a 2 story house, and we just carry the receiver downstairs when we go down. No need for a 2nd one, IMO.
We have the Summer Video Monitor and I believe it is that much better and so worth it! It is a life-saver! Literally, as Will has gotten older I've been able to seen when he has pulled things into his crib - like the sound machine - he was playing with the cord! And when he is crying I can look and see whether he is laying down crying and settling or up and walking around and crying, etc. It is the one baby item I wouldn't do without!
