2nd Trimester

Gallstones...

Okay...so yesterday I had a 3rd upper abdominal attack...this one lasting for over 45 mins...and I was sent to the ER.

After an abdominal ultrasound I was told that about 1/3 of my gallbladder was filled with fairly large gallstones.

My questions is.....is anyone else plagued with gallstone and gallbladder attacks?  And has anyone had thier gallbladder removed?!

I was told that if I can't lessen the frequency of the attacks with dietary restrictions they are going to take my gallbladder out while I am still pregnant.  If I am able to control the frequency they will wait until I deliver.

Just curious if anyone else has gone though this?!

Thanks in advance...

Re: Gallstones...

  • I had my GB out at 19 yo. The attacks are the worst...I thought I was  having a heart attack. It was removed liproscopically(sp?) and the recovery was about 2 weeks.

  • I had mine out when I was 22....back in 1991. I had a long recovery because the doctor screwed up during surgery, but the recovery was still fairly easy. It's very routine for them to remove gallbladders.

Good luck, and hang in there.

  • I had to have emergency surgery about 6 years ago.  The attacks were horrible and kept getting worse each time I had one.  One night I woke my ex-husband up and told him that he needed to take me to the ER because something was seriously wrong and I thought that something needed to be removed.  LOL!  He grumbled, got dressed, and took me to the ER.  Sure enough, my gallbladder needed to be removed!  So, they did the surgery that day.

I had the laparoscopic surgery done and it wasn't too bad.  I was pretty sore for about 2 weeks after, but it wasn't bad at all.

  • I did with my first pregnancy. Ended up in hospital twice. They put me on a no fat low fat diet.
  • I had my gallbladder removed in 2007.  Don't eat any food with fat in it no matter if it sounds yummy!  Those attacks are the worst!  I'm so sorry you're going through this while pregnant!  I had one attack in 2007 that lasted 10 hours!  At that time I had no idea what it was and I thought I was dying!  To top it all off I was traveling and couldn't go to the doctor!  It was horrible!

  • I had to have mine removed during this pregnancy - they did mine at 16 weeks and I was completely full at that point, even after following a low fat diet.  My doc told me that it's hormone related too - preg hormones cause you to metabolize stuff differently.

I can tell you that after 10 weeks of major pain and no fat and feeling like I can't eat - I have had it out for almost 10 weeks now and feel 100x better!!! It's just such a crappy feeling, I hope you get some relief - and let me know if you have any questions about it!!
