Babies on the Brain

Fred

I know you make doggie treats--have you ever made dog food?

I found a bunch of recipes with brown rice, potatoes and ground turkey/beef/chicken. I think Lucy would really like it because she loves wet food. But I found a ton of conflicting information, too, so I am still nervous.

Re: Fred

  • Not Fred, but I've made dog food.  My female pug is allergic to a lot so I've found it easiest to make her food.  I can try to help....

  • How do you make it? I think I get the basic idea--a meat, rice and a vegetable. But I'd like to hear what others have success with before I give it a go.

  • I've always done ground turkey, browned, with some chopped garlic.  I mix it with brown rice and peas are a big hit in my house.  She LOVES peas.  But most veggies are fine.

Even on the days I feed her her regular dog kibbles I put peas in it.

It doesn't require anything really fancy to put together a dog food.  Just make sure they are getting enough of the food groups to keep up their vitamin/mineral intake.  Also if you're afraid your homemade food isn't giving them enough, they have powdered supplements you can add.  I've never done that and my dog is doing well and isn't suffering from skin allergies anymore.

  • Also, treats in my house are usually dehydrated apple slices with dehydrated chicken wrapped around them.

  • LoL at the Wolves! I saw your details in the post after I asked, sorry!

I saw some information on the raw foods, and thought about it. She really prefers wet food to kibble. She eats the dry food happily, but man does she love it its wet food.

She has no health problems/allergies/ or anything like that, but for a good portion of my dog ownership life, I truly had no idea that these foods were so bad! My dogs growing up ate them, and so did his parent's dogs. Sigh. I'm a bad parent already.

  • You're the best. Really and truly.

I figure since she's healthy, I'm not doing that bad yet. But we can do much better by her, and we will! :)
