How much is your LO eating?

Zach is taking down 4oz with 4tsp of rice every 3-3.5 hours. The pedi said the added rice would help him sleep longer but we are not seeing that yet and it has been a couple of weeks. We started out with one tsp of rice and slowly added more. The G.I. Dr. said to add one tsp of rice per oz. of formula. Sometimes he takes 3oz sometimes 4oz and a few times only 2oz. Not sure why his eating has changed, he used to eat 4oz every time but with the rice he is eating less. I'm sure it is b/c he is getting more full with the added rice but I'm waiting for that longer stretch between feedings. Also, his new thing is he likes to chew on the bottle nipple while he eats and it takes forever to feed him b/c he is too busy playing...not so bad during the day but at 3am it's a little annoying!!

  • Jack is eatting 7 oz every 4 hours...He has recently started chewing on the nipple too..Takes him about 40 minutes to an hour to eat now

  • Trent right now is eating about 5-6oz every 4 hours during the day. He hasn't been waking up at night much so we usually get a break 11ish to 630ish.
  • WOW....5-7oz? Are you using rice? He spits up so much and with the colic and screaming he rarely takes down the whole 4oz. Should I be concerned?

I would love to get a break like that. Trent is so cute!

  • Trent isn't using rice just formula. I really wouldn't be concerned unless the pedi is, I would mention your concern next visit and go from there.

Thanks! I can't believe how big your little man is getting, I hadn't seen pics of him since he was a newborn. What a handsome little guy.

  • I was a little surprised to hear that your LO is taking that long to eat. Just an FYI when a baby is just being bottle fed, feeding should last no longer than 30mins. When feedings last longer than this, babies end up expending more calories to eat than they are taking in. You may want to try changing to a higher flow nipple or talk to your ped about this, it may also be why he is taking in so much at a young age

Natalie still only takes 2-4 oz about every 3 hours. I was seriously shocked when I saw 5-7 oz as well.

  • We were just at the pedi Friday, and they didn't say anything about the amount or freqency. We think he is hitting a growth spurt, because it was 6 oz ever 5 hours (give or take an hour each way) and then  6 oz just didn't seem to cut it for him. Sometimes he eats his bottle without a lot of messing around and he eats a lot faster, and then sometimes he chews on his nipple and takes his time.

Pedi said no cereal at all until he hits 4 mos firm.

  • Did you change your nipples for your bottles? We have tried the playtex fast and dr browns y cut and like the playtex better.?

We also decided DS does a better with less rice (1/2 - 3/4 tsp per oz) just from experiencing, the 1 tsp took forever for him to eat

Also DS is taking 3-4 ozs max a serving?

  • 3-4 oz every 3-4 hours. sometimes a 1-2 oz snack in between.
  • WoW..5-7 oz??? Our babies are almost the same age, and my DD has been stuck on 4oz every 3-4 hours for a few weeks, then she usually spits up about half of that when she burps. How did you know when to move up her intake? She seems to be content with the 4 oz now, but we are thinking about bumping her up a half oz or so to see how she does with it. Same here, our pedi said NO rice until she's 4-6 months old.
