Has anyone had this happen? My cat was using the litter box just fine, then all of a sudden started going to the bathroom in our bath tub. I tried moving the litter box to the bathroom, then tried putting it in the shower. The cat would go around it and still go in the bath tub. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting her to use the litter box again?
Re: NBR: Cat using bath tub instead of litter box?
I know there are worse places she could do her business. If she would use the toilet, I would flush it for her with no problem, but she chooses to drink out of it like a dog would.
My cat is so confused!
My cat did this a few months ago. When they stop using their litter box, it is usually a sign of a urinary tract infection. Other signs can be frequent urination (but not a lot comes out), excessive grooming of the genitals, and blood in urine. My cat had all of the symptoms except the blood in urine. You might want to take a trip to the vet.
ETA: When they stop using their box, they are trying to tell you that something is wrong (according to my vet).
What she said. It could also be a stress response to a bew baby. Either way go to the vet. If it is stress, try a comfort zone/feliway diffuser and/or rescue remedy.
Um..I need to stop calling the cat a she. It's habit more than anything. When we brough DS home from the hospital, we found out she is really a HE. Our cat has testicles.
My cat never pooped in the shower, just peed. I actually didn't notice the other symptoms with him until after he started peeing in the shower. It actually took me a few days to realize that he was going in the shower (he was using the shower off of our living room that we never use). Start watching him and see if he is doing anything else weird (mine actually starting meowing a lot too, which is odd for him).
Good luck!!
Did you rule out a UTI by going to the vet?
Yes. Get to the vet ASAP. UTI's are horrible (as in, deadly) for cats, especially male cats. and they are also more frequent in male cats.
Basically, if he has a UTI, it hurts to pee. well, he associates the litter box with hurting him, not the peeing part of it. so he goes elsewhere. and its still okay to poop in the box (according to the cat mind).
If that's not the case, cat attract litter, cat pheromone diffusers, and confining the cat to a smaller space with his litter box.
