How do you find a pediatrician...

How do you find a pediatrician that is more AP style- ie doesn't recommend CIO to you, is encouraging with BF, doesn't push vaccines (not that that is AP).  I'm having trouble searching~ thanks for any tips!

Re: How do you find a pediatrician...

  • I actually found mine by chance.  He was on the list of pedis that could practice at the hospital I gave birth at and my mom knew someone that has gone to him since she was a baby.  He's like 70+ years old and very old school but fits perfectly with us.  He thinks my carriers are such a great thing and actually had a conversation with me about how that is how babies used to be held and he thinks it should continue to be that way.  Anyways, after all that, I am probably no help to your question.  Maybe check with some like minded moms in your area?

  • I just did a google search for holistic pediatricians and I found this, hopefully it helps

  • My Bradley Childbirth instructor recommended them.

  • I got the recommendation from my midwife.

Although, while I do love our pediatrician (for all of the reasons you listed), she did suggest getting DD out of our bed by 6 months and that turning the monitor off would be a great way for her to sleep through the night.  So, we still have our fair share of differences but her suggestions are clearly her opinion and she has not tried to push us into doing anything we're not comfortable with.

    Ditto.

Do you have a local Holistic Mom's group, API group, etc? Often they have message boards/email loops that you could use to ask for referrals.

  • I stumbled on her by chance. I went to another DR in the office for a cyst to be removed while I was pregnant, I really liked the clinic and decided to have DS go there, its also 2 minutes away.

Our first meeting with her after having DS, she was very "crunchy" bed shared, her own kids were on a modified shots schedule, she believes in baby wearing and thinks people that can CIO are pretty much monsters.

I liked her a lot because she didn't judge me for my AP style parenting

OK - that wasn't helpful.  I think you probably just have to ask around or call around.  I hope you can at least find someone who is more open-minded.  I've never understood the point of arguing with parents about their parenting choices.  As long as it is not harmful to the kid, I make sure the parents know the benefits and risks and then move on.
