BLW Folks... constipation?

For the past few weeks DD keeps getting bouts with constipation and it's so sad to see her grunting and crying.  We don't feed her a ton of starches, we give her a lot of vegetables, we feed her healthy fats like avocados, she drinks water and still is primarily nourished by breast milk (on demand).  We are hoever vegetarians so we don't feed her any meats.  However right now as I type this she is playing and occasionally gasping and looking miserable and I know in ten minutes I will find a marble or two.  The thing is when she poops again say on Thursday it will be very soft.  No real rhyme or reason and I can't seem to see a coorelation with her diet.

Anyone else dealing with this?  It this more prevalent with those who BLW?  TIA.

  • And to add to this, we do add lots of softening foods to her diet - peaches, peas, pears, papaya, apricots, spinach, etc.  It doesn't seem to make too much of a difference.  The pedi said try prune juice cut with a ton of water and she hates it.  It's not to the point that she can't poop, it just seems like a really miserable experience 75% of the time.

  • DS is hit or miss.  There is no pattern I can figure out.

Blueberries make him poop every time though.  Fresh, frozen, dried, doesn't matter.

I bet it has nothing to do with BLW and everything to do with beign a toddler with sporadic eating habits.

I agree with this.  I bet it would actually be more prevelant in families that are spoon feeding LO's since it involves less choice on the baby's part, but that's totally a guess.

Plums and black beans work well for us.

  • Good to know since the pedi made it seem as though it was our faults and not usual at all. Angry

    Thanks everyone!

  • ditto the black beans!

DD was constipated last week, and this week she had lots of black beans and butternut squash. I didn't realize she was actually swallowing as much as she is (yay! it's taken forever for her to get that down!) but sure enough, there were a ton of black bean husks in there. Ok, sorry, that's totally TMI --- but anyway, softer stools for sure!

  • we dealt with this with DD for about three months. it got so bad there was blood every.time. and some would seriously take her an hour to work out. i had tried cutting out all allergens back when she was EBFd, but found those issues were just over-active letdown/excess milk. but since cutting them out hadn't produced any differences in sleep/demeanor/diapers i figured she didn't have any issues again.

finally, i decided to try cutting out milk, soy, and eggs from her solids and my diet. eventually we found that she cannot tolerate dairy at all, even the tiny bits of hidden dairy in some things. but if i eat it, she is fine. i don't get it, but i have a much happier baby now. she still doesn't poop daily, but they are much much easier to pass for her now!
