Success after IF

Cycles...I feel dumb asking

I have no idea why I can't figure this out.  But maybe I'm thinking too much into it.  If you successfully ovulate, you get a period, right?  I have PCOS and my cycles were 35-45 days and sometimes longer, but that was average.  Many months I never got a +OPK and needed Metformin to ovulate "properly".  However, I was fortunate to never needed something to start AF.  So, if I'm BFing, and haven't had a period yet, that means I haven't ovulated, right?  I've taken multiple $ Tree HPT's just cause I'm never sure, so I know I'm not pregnant.  My friend (who had 4 kids easily) and never had a period in between cause she was BFing the whole time....says that I can temp if I want.  But, didn't she just get lucky and have sex at the exact right time of ovulation?  She claims she was ovulating while BFing and just not getting AF.  But I disagree.  It's like what comes first, the chicken or the egg...a period has to come after AF, UNLESS you get pregnant first, right???  I want to get pregnant so badly, but don't want to wean Aiden from BFing.  I mean, there's other things I'm nervous about as well, cause I was taking Met and Progesterone to sustain the pregnancies...but those questions will come when the time is right I guess.  Can someone please help me understand what I'm missing or if I'm thinking right?  Hopefully I don't get flamed for not understanding something I should after battling IF for almost 3 years!  Aiden took my brain!

Re: Cycles...I feel dumb asking

  • You are right, your friend is wrong. You can not ovulate and get AF, but you cannot ovulate and NOT get AF. If you ovulate and don't get AF, you are pregnant. If you haven't had AF yet, you haven't ovulated yet.

  • However, it IS possible to ovulate before you get your first PP AF. Not many women do, but it is possible.

My mom had 5 children and literally did not get a period in between. She would deliver, BF for a year or so, wean, and then get pregnant again before her first period PP.

unless you catch the egg on the first ovulation. Then you could ovulate, get pregnant and not get AF. I totally agree that if you ovulate and don't get pregnant, then you have to get AF.

  • ditto the pp's.  Also, I know met is compatible with bf'ing, not sure about progesterone though

  • I'm no help sweetie, but I hope it happens for you quickly.

I've never been diagnosed with PCOS.  I had only ONE period and I'm still BFing. I think you can ovulate before that first postpartum period.

I think not everyone can get pregnant while still BFing, but I'm not sure.

  • ditto pp.

If you ovulate, you will either get AF, or you are pg.

You can ovulate and get pg while BF, although it is uncommon if you are exclusively BF before baby starts solids. (my doctor told me 98% WHILE you are exclusively BF and baby eats nothing else, but there are obviously failures, just like with condoms)

You can get AF without ovulating (breakthrough period)--this happens frequently to us PCOS girls.

You do not just ovulate, ovulate, ovulate without ever having AF.  Your friend is not correct.
