Nannies

Hi everyone - My name is Michelle and I'm due with my first child in March and am debating between getting a nanny versus using daycare when I go back to work.  Does anyone have any experience with hiring a nanny and have any recommendations for how to find one?  We live in the Royal Oak / Birmingham area.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Nannies

  • We are actually in the process of finding a nanny.  There is a great website nannies4hire.com, and you can find lots of them based on your location. We are opting for a nanny because DD needs constant care due to GERD, (she chokes and stops breathing, and can't ever be laid on her back flat) and I wanted to make sure she gets very specialized attention.

pros- your child is the only one, it's in home so you don't have to pack a diaper bag etc. every morning or drive to drop them off.

cons- much more costly (around $300-$400/week) your child will not socialize with others daily.

    Good Luck!

  • I just recently heard about a website:   www.gonannies.com

Unfortunately I only quickly went to their website and didn't too much research of my own. My husband's boss went through this website to find their nanny a few years ago and had good luck with it. Hopefully this will be helpful. Good Luck.

  • Thank you ladies!  So many decisions to make!  :)
  • you can also try sittercity.com to find nannies. good luck!
  • We went with a center - Tutor Time.  We liked the fact that in the center there's no television or computer or anything to distract the teachers from our child and that there's constant supervision.  Parents can walk by and see into the rooms from the hall and the director has all of the rooms on camera.  Now that DD is older, we also like that they teach her and that there is the social interaction with the other kids.  The other consideration for us was that a friend who had a nanny had mentioned that it's difficult to find reliable morning help.  If the nanny 'calls in sick' you have to stay home from work and such.

It was also less expensive.  Nanny's near us run $8 an hour so it was about $400 a week, compared with $228 a week for the day care center.
