Trouble TTC

Another newbie here

Noticed the other posts, and decided to introduce myself. I love talking to people in similar situations but it's also easy to get sucked in as well, so I'm a little more reserved, but I do want to learn from all you ladies. My husband and I have been TTC for about 4 months now, however we have been using zero protection since January 09. I have very irregular periods, taking Provera to jump start those and Clomid so we'll see how it all goes.

  • Hello! I'm new here as well. Good luck to you!

  • If you have been having unprotected sex since January of last year, you have been trying (maybe subconsciously, but trying none the less) for almost a year.

Have you had any testing done to find out why you may be having irregular cycles? That  should be your first step before trying to treat an issue with clomid

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the info. I haven't done any testing yet. Does your regular Gyno do the testing or do you have to go to a specialist?

Here's something I don't understand and maybe you might have some insight. From January to August, AF didn't visit me. Didn't really care until we started "actively" trying. Went to the doc, everything looked good, started me on Provera and then Clomid. I didn't ovulate the first month on clomid (blood test for increase in Progesterone). I did however O the second month of Clomid and then the third month no AF, tested, no baby. So the doc started me on Provera again and now taking Clomid. Also doing the O test kits.

  • Did you stop taking the pill before TTC - sometimes it can take a few months to get a period after going off them. But since you had a couple of recent long cycles, there could be a hormonal reason as to why you are not ovulating. Did you have issues before going on BCP (assuming at one point you did use them) where you had irregular periods? There can be many different reasons for not ovulating regularly (PCOS, thyroid, prolactin etc), but without testing it will be impossible to pinpoint.

You can get lucky and find a gyn who will do testing. Unfortunately, there are far to many gyns who through clomid out there because it is easier for them to treat a condition then dx one.

Reproductive endocrynologists (REs) deal with infertility issues all the time it is not just a side job in between delivering babies and paps and std's. Gyns do not have the time to properly manage a cycle and see people for follow ups for monitoring testing etc., so they throw clomid out there and hope for an easy fix. Unfortunately, many times it turns out to be a wasted 3-4 months of both time and money.

REs just deal with this day in a day out. They study and follow advancements in the ever growing IF field (which is still fairly new in terms of medical years) this is all they do.

You need to be an advocate for your own health. Go to your RE and request testing, which would include cd3 blood work, an HSG to see if you have clear tubes, an SA for your h and then u/s to see if the clomid is working. If she is unwilling to do this, I strongly suggest finding someone who will!

    Good luck

  • Thanks again for the info. I've been only seeing a regular Gyn and have now looked into REs in my area thanks you to you! My reg Gyn did test me for thyroid problems and that came back neg. I've been on BCP for close to 10 years, I know I was not that regular before but I honestly can't remember how irregular they were. I stopped BC in Jan of this year because I had stroke symptoms. I had one period in February and then nothing until the doc started me on Provera. So I guess my next step is finding an RE. Unfortunately I can't find very many referrals online so hopefully I can find a good one with my eyes closed!! :)

Thanks again for the help and Congrats! You're little one is almost here!

  • Your welcome, you may want to post over on the Infertility board to see if anyone in your area might be able to recommend someone!

    Good luck!

  • this is so helpful.  I just went off the pill 4 months ago and had a normal cycle untill this month.  I was hoping for a BFP but nope nothing.  It is so disapointing!!   I am not sure if I should wait and see what happens next month or call now?
