Ergo, Moby, or Mei Tai?

Hi,

I was wondering which (in your opinion) was the best? Looking for something to use pretty soon after the baby is born. I like the idea of the Moby, and the Mei Tai, but not sure how they are on the back of the carrier. I've been reading lots, but there are so many different points of view. What's worked for you? TIA!

Re: Ergo, Moby, or Mei Tai?

  • I never used the Moby.  Mei Tai is great from birth on up.  Still great with my almost 20 pound kiddo.

Just ordered my Ergo, so no comments on that one yet :)

  • We had a Moby when DD was born and loved it.  There are plenty of videos and tutorials out there to help you master the wraps, and it was a great one for both DH and I.  I loved it because I could do skin to skin and not feel naked if people stopped by (really covers the front of the body while you're in bed) and that it worked for my 5'3" curvy self as well as my 6'5" lanky husband.

Now we are major Ergo fans.  I love that there aren't any ties; it's already buckled so if you were the last to wear it it's almost a custom fit.  DH adores it, he wears it during the day on his back when vacuuming or washing dishes and goes hiking and to the store with DD happily in it.  I like it for the front carry and feel as though I can carry DD for hours without back or shoulder pain.  It is totally worth the money.

  • I used a mei tai when Seth was a newborn and it was comfy and fine, but I found that if I was walking or moving around a lot, I had to have my hand on his head because it wasn't especially supportive of his head, especially when he was sleeping.

For the new baby, I have a Moby which I like to use with Seth so I imagine I'll like it with a little baby, but I also have an Ergo now.  I bought the new infant insert and think it will be a great combination.  I imagine I'll use it more than the Moby.

As for growing with baby, I highly recommend the Ergo.  I think perhaps you can use back carries earlier (as early as a few days old) with a mei tai (though I never personally did), but I like the back carry a LOT better with my Ergo than my mei tai because it's easier to get on and I can get it tighter and a better fit all around.

  • I think a Moby is a great place to start!  It is a cost effective way to get a taste for wrapping and see if it is something that you will like or not.  We started with a moby type and then moved on to a woven wrap (storch) and an ergo when dd got to heavy for the stretchy wrap (around a year for her).  Wraps are GREAT as far as comfort goes because they are so adjustable.  You can move to different carry positions or just adjust the way the wrap is sitting to move the weight around. I have back issues and always reach for my wraps first if I want a comfortable carry.

  • Thanks, everyone!
