Prevacid ?

One of my sons was prescribed prevacid for reflux and I was wondering what your experience has  but been with it? My son doesn't spit up, but he has the classic back arching thing going on. Do you have it flavored for your LO? Do you give it in the bottle or directly in your DCs mouth? TIA

Re: Prevacid ?

  • Robbie was on prevacid suspension (liquid) for a bit. We flavored it, but it didn't matter, he *HATED* it. It's mixed into salt water so it tastes like ass.

Be aware that it also breaks down quickly. The solutabs are a better answer because they work better and honestly, they taste better.

I recommend this page (this site, really) for info:

  • We had the solutabs.  We dissolved them in a little bit of water in the syringe and then put it directly into her mouth.  I don't like to mix any medication in her bottles because I'm paranoid that she won't get it all.

  • We got the prevacid in liquid form, which meant going to a compounding pharmacy and our insurance not covering it.  We would just squirt it in DS's mouth.  He wasn't really picky about taste.  If you do give it in a bottle to help cover the taste, I would recommend using a small amount of milk/formula, like 1oz.  That way they get the full amount of medicine.  If you put it in a big bottle, then they may not take the whole bottle and not get all the prevacid.

The prevacid really helped DS.  Once we got the correct dosage down (1ml/2x day) it was like magic.  Good luck.

  • We are HUGE Prevacid fans at our house. It seriously made the difference between DD crying all day and well into the night (like falling asleep next to her swing at 3am night) and DD only crying when she needs something. Wonder drug. We got the solutabs and DD eats them right up. The trick seems to be to shoot it - very slowly - into her cheek.
  • Thanks ladies! I hope this works.

  • We tried the liquid form but cound not always get it all in his mouth.  So We are no on the solutabs.  We tried dissolving it in water then giving it to him, but he would never get all of the granuals.  So now we give it to him in pieces followed with a little water.  We can see the difference.  He still has his moments, but it is soooooo much better now!
  • We use the liquid and put it into a OZ of formula so he gets it all.  It has really helped with the arching of the back and constant crankiness.  It's like having a different baby once it kicks in.  Good luck I hope it works just as well for your LO.
