hip pain and sleeping

My hip pain has returned despite my using the snoogle. Last night I got up at 2am and slept the rest of the night in the recliner in the nursery- less than ideal. What are you doing if you have hip pain, especially on your left side when you sleep? I'm not looking forward to spending the next 12+ weeks sleeping in a recliner if it comes to that

Re: hip pain and sleeping

  • My hip pain is awful. All I have been able to do is start out on my left (which hurts the most) with a pillow propped between my knees, and then flip to my right side when that gets too intense.

It doesn't go away, but it helps that I flip back and forth a bit.

  • My hip pain is generally in my right hip. My left one does start to hurt during the night so I just flip onto my back for a bit until my hip stops hurting and then I roll back onto my left side. It's been working for me lately and I've been managing to get a half decent sleep at night.
  • Honestly, I am suffering through it!  I have been feeling this way for weeks.  Although, I have found that if I take tylenol before bed, that helps, but I try not to do so that often.  Only if I want to catch up on my sleep on the weekend or if I have a big day the next day that I need a good nights sleep.  I have heard Tylenol PM is really helpful too, but, I hate taking those types of medicine b/c I am so groggy the next day.

  • I flip around a lot at night, but I am starting to think that I might have to sleep in the recliner soon.  I napped in the recliner on Saturday and it worked out okay.  My chiropractor suggested using heat on it yesterday so I may get out some hot packs and see if that helps.

  • i've just been flipping from side to side... but the word flipping makes it sounds too easy more like struggle to turn from my left to right then back again...it's gotten increasingly harder as the weeks go by... oh to be able to sleep on my back/side/stomach however I want again! can't wait!

  • I've just been rolling over when the hip pain is enough to wake me up. Then when that hip starts hurting too much, I roll over again. I used to be able to last 2 or 3 hours on a side, but now, it's like 1 hour per side. I sleep with a body pillow. This week, my shoulders and hands have started hurting while I'm sleeping, too. Sad

  • I get it really bad some nights on my left, but i usually lay on my back till the feeling goes away and try to sleep on that side again...if i can't i switch to the right side with a pillow under my stomach so it LO doesn't think i switched sides weight wise.
  • I've been doing the flip flop thing with the pillow between my knees.  Also - I feel like I am sleeping more on my belly than I used to (maybe because there is more of it and gravity has control!).  I guess this is nature's way to prepare us for fitful sleeping to come!

This is basically what I do, when DH gives me enough room and isn't facing me.. He has a deviated septum and I can't handle him loudly breathing through his mouth right in my face during the night.

  • I feel your pain!  I get it bad on my right side so I usually just go to sleep on whatever side I'm more comfy and then when my hip hurts to where it wakes me up, I turn over.   Usually turning over doesn't always do it though so I sleep with a pillow between my legs and that helps sometimes.  I honestly sleep much better on my couch.  I think it's because my head is more elevated or something.

  • Sleeping with a pillow between my legs has been helping most nights.  When it doesn't, I get up and walk around a little bit and that seems to do the trick.

  • I get hip pain after a few hours of sleep no matter what side I'm sleeping on. I just prop up some pillows and let myself sleep on my back for a few hours  and that seems to help. As long as you're not flat on your back, the blood flow thing shouldn't be an issue.

This is great news!  I have been struggling with sleeping on my left side due to hip pain and leg cramps.  It's not much better on the right side.  I got tons of pillows and piled them up against my headboard and made a sort of "nest" out of more pillows and a long body pillow.

I get down in the middle of it and sleep on my side by propped by under my shoulders and head.  This has helped a bit with side sleeping.  But inevitably I don end up on my back, in the propped position (not flat) and it's the most comfortable but then my DH wakes me up because "you're on your back!"  ARG!

I have been doing the body pillow between my legs on my side and it's okay, but last night I put my left leg ontop of the pillow and another pillow between my knees and that was even better!  It took all the pressure off my hip!  I may try that again or just go with sleeping on my back in a propped-up/reclined position.

  • Get yourself a twin size 3" memory foam mattress topper from BBB. I also use one of those contour pillow things between my knees which run about 20 bucks.

Best 150 bucks I ever spent. (use the 20% coupon!)
