How hard is it to bake a pie and not screw it up?

I am almost embarrassed to say this, but I'm 36 years old and have never baked a pie.  We were asked to bring pumpkin pies to Thanksgiving dinner.  I was going to do my normal go to the store and purchase them routine, but thought maybe it's high time I learned to bake one.

I'm sure I can handle the assembling of it, but am worried that I'll over/under cook it.  How do you tell when it's just right?

  • I just did my first one last night. Pumpkin! I used the Libby's recipe. Easy and delicious!! (seriously, really really easy!)

  • The hardest part is the crust, but you can buy those premade. Find a recipe that sounds good and follow it to the letter. You can stick a toothpick in to see if the filling is set.

  • I am not sure you can really overcook pumpkin pie.  It stays pretty moist.  I take mine out of the oven when the center is no longer jiggly.  I have a yummy pumpkin pie recipe that calls for melted vanilla ice cream :)

    You can do it!

  • It's really not that hard.  I usually just follow the time the recipe gives.  It seems like with pies, usually once the crust starts to brown is when they're done.  If the crust looks under cooked, it's because it's not ready

Yep, I started out with this one as well! It was super easy, and I'm no baker.

ETA: I also use pre-made crusts. I'm no fool.

This recipe was also super easy. I used two eggs instead of three in the topping and 2/3 cup of light corn syrup because it seemed like a lot of liquid, and a woman who reviewed it said that she did it. It came out perfectly.

  • Ditto the Libby's recipe. I can't bake to save my life and I was successful on that one. And second ditto on the pre-baked crusts.

  • just buy some pillsbury pie crusts, a big can of libby's pumpkin pie filling, i think all you add are eggs & sweetened condensed milk (check the back of the can) and bake for however long the can says.  easy peasy rice & cheesy.
  • Ok, Libby's recipe, pre-made crusts and the toothpick test it is.  Thanks!
  • Pumpkin pie is easy! Use the Libby's recipe, but make sure that you don't mistake sweetened condensed milk for evaporated milk. I did that yesterday...yuck. You want the sweetened kind!

  • *plugs ears*  I REFUSE to believe that people use premade crusts *lalalalalalallalalalala*

For me there's no point in making it from scratch if you're not going to make the crust (which is super easy to anyway....)

  • One more tip.  Cover the edges of your pie crust with aluminum foil while baking.  This prevents them from burning.  Have fun!
