2nd Trimester

Echogenic intracardiac foci

Had the big ultrasound last weekend and everything looked normal except they saw a tiny bright blip in the heart.  It isn't blocking any blood flow and all the other cardiac structures looked normal.  They say there can be a small association with EIF's and Down's Syndrome, but we don't have any other markers to suspect DS.  Dr. recommended a follow-up US in a month or two.  We're pretty worried, and I don't really know what testing we should do next.  Anyone else going through something like this?

Re: Echogenic intracardiac foci

  • Are they doing a fetal echo?  I would think they would do that to get a better look at the heart.  We're having one done when I'm around 23 weeks.

  • We had the f/u echocardiogram as well as our dr. thought there could be a small hole in LO's heart. Everything on ours turned out fine (there isn't one), but I know it's not that uncommon for people to be told their baby has a bright spot. Don't freak out, I think the vast majority of the time this is nothing, and even increasing the odds doesn't make the odds very high at all. You can choose to have amnio, what does your ob say about it? Were you given any statistical odds on what the increase is? Did you have first tri screening?

If I were you, I personally wouldn't have amnio. One soft marker typically means nothing. These tests can't tell/prove everything-- a lot of people don't get them done in the first place.

  • HI, We have the same issue going on with ours. I am 22 weeks, baby boy.  He has the same bright spot and doctor said the same thing. We opted to get the "2nd level ultrasound", which was just a 4-D ultrasound with a perinatolgist. She agreed with my doctor and advised that the chance of the baby having DS was .5%.

As low as this is, we are of coarse still a little worried... hoping that it desipates by third trimester.

  • My baby also has an EIF and I was stressed until we saw the specialist.  We too had no other markers.  We had a follow up ultrasound and were sent to a specialist.  Where she told me not to give it a second thought and how many doctors are even backing away from this being related to downs.  She said she did have to tell me that it could raise my chances very slightly but because there no other marker present not to worry.  Then she told me this "1 in 20 normal healthy pregnancies have this with 0% link towards anything" because it is so common to be nothing is why it is becoming phased out as a marker.  Even if counted as a marker it is a weaker one at that.  Bottom line is both of our little ones are healthy and happy.  We are just one of those lucky one in twenties.
