Babies: 3 - 6 Months

congested baby

uhhh, this was our night:

2:00 woke up, soothed to sleep

2:30 woke up, soothed to sleep

3:00 DH got up (not too helpful) and I could hear him LOUD SHHH'ing and saying "STOP".

3:15 I get up to see why he's being mean to the baby and see him struggling with the booger bulb, saline drops and a screaming baby.

4:00 I decide to feed him

7:30 awake again.

OK, help me out.  We did humidifier, saline, bulb... is there anything else we can do to help this kid breathe and in turn sleep?  My mom told me that there may be viccs for the humidifier... do you know if that's ok?  or if it even exists?  Give me your expertise!  Thanks

Re: congested baby

  • Oh, and the funny part, DH was Sooooooo tired this morning because he was awake for a whole 15 minutes!  Cry me a river!
  • Loading the player...
  • The only other thing we have done is elevate the mattress.  I've noticed that helps DS breathe easier when he is congested.  Not sure about the vicks though

  • Vicks directly on the skin isn't ok but in the humidifier it is and yes it does exist! Vicks sells there on humidifier.  If you don't want to put it in the humidifier, BRU sells a plug in night light with vicks.  I had that in DD's room when she was congested.  Unfortunately she was really sick and needed a nebulizer.  We did sit in the bathroom with a lot of steam and it helped her out for a few hours.

you can try getting him in a steamy bathroom.

He needs a nebulizer too because he has underlying lung issues and we do NOT want this congestion to creep from his nose to his lungs.  Thanks for the info, mavilla!

  • We did the humidifier, saline, bulb, elevated mattress.  Ended up at drs office and they gave us a Rx for Albuterol inhaler and a little mask to use with it.  It's helped break up the congestion.
  • I feel your pain! This is the 3rd time we have gone through the congestion. We have the mattress propped up but that doesn't even help now because she is all over the crib. I read you can also take them in the bathroom and let the shower run and that the steam will help. We may try that tonight. Good luck!
  • how does the nose frida work?  the pics on the site are freaking me out a little Wink  but if it works as well as the testimonials say...

I think you suck out the baby's boogers.  Looks gross, but if it works, whatever!

  • I wouldn't use vicks in the humidifier but you could try J&J vapor bath in his tub. Also elevate the mattress.
