Group B Strep

I tested positive for Group B Strep, and I was wondering if anyone else on here has as well?  The doctor put me on an antibiotic right after I found out (at 8 weeks).  They then tested me again when I just went in (12 weeks), well I tested positive again, and my doc wants me to go on an antibiotic again.  It just seems weird to me because I have read that some people will always have it and usually they check in the 3rd trimester for it, and I will have to be on IV antibiotic during delivery.  Has anyone else had any experience with this?

  • I was tested at 36 weeks and am positive. I will need to have 2 bags of IV antibotics during delivery, they are for the baby.

For my understanding, it's not any infection YOU have but something the baby could get an infection for, so why they keep treating you I am not sure as you will just keep getting it.

  • I was tested at 36 weeks. The test came back negative so I don't have to worry about it but my doctor said if it would have been positive that they treat it with antibiotics during delivery. It is not an issue for you to have it but it can be dangerous for the baby...as far as I understood what my doctor said.

Well, that's what I understood, it seems dumb for me to keep taking antibiotics for it....  I guess I will have to ask my doctor for further explanation!  Thanks, ladies!

  • I personally haven't heard of this test being done this early.  I usually hear it being done around 36 weeks.  I delivered at 35 weeks with DD so I never had the test done.  I believe I was supposed to be given antibotics during my delivery and to be honest I don't know if I was.  Fortunately, things were fine.  I guess I would talk to your physician to see the reasoning for doing it so early.

  • I tested positive for it in 1st tri during a routine urine test so my doctor said I will be treated with IV antibiotics during labor. He said they usually swab test your vagina and rectum in 3rd tri but that I don't need to because once you test positive they do the IV during labor no matter what, even if I were to test negative later on in pregnancy- just as a precaution. I would think the antibiotics ahead of time are unnecessary. My midwife said it is common, about 1/3 of women have it.
  • I was tested positive around 30ish weeks and I had an IV during labor...I guess I haven't heard of being treated for it prior to labor.
  • Yeah, I tested positive at 36 weeks.  I was given an IV with antibiotics throughout labor.  DS was healthy and there were no issues.

That is really unusual that your OB is giving you antibiotics right now... it's not going to do anything.

  • I had it with both pregnancies and was just given IV antibiotics during delivery. Nothing before that, and I was only tested in the 3rd trimester...
