1st Trimester

Passed a small amout of old blood.

So I woke up this morning and after going to the restroom I noticed a small amount of blood, looked like blood at the end of your period. I have no cramping and am trying not to get worried but so far that isn't going to well. I am 7 weeks and 2 days along and we heard a strong heatbeat of 126 last wed, so everything looked good then.

Has anyone else passed any old brown blood? Did everything turn out ok or was it the beginning of a problem. If I didn't have the ultrasound less than a week ago I would be more concerned but do not really know what to think.

Once you have seen a properly growing baby with a heartbeat don't your chances of m/c decrease drastically or is that information I made up.

Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Passed a small amout of old blood.

  • Brown blood is absolutely nothing to worry about, it's just old blood coming down from an old period or something, so everything is fine! I had brown blood for about 8 days straight. As long as it doesn't turn red and heavy, you are totally alright! :)

And yes, seeing the heartbeat means your m/c rate drops from 20% to less than 2%, so I'm sure everything is perfectly fine! :)

  • I had something similar happen last Friday.  I also had some cramping, so I went to the ER late Friday evening convinced that I was miscarrying.  As soon as the doctor put the doppler on my stomach, we were able to hear the heartbeat - 168 BPM.  The spotting has subsided and everything appears to be okay.  Try to take it easy and drink lots of fluids.  It is probably nothing to worry about, but you should mention it to your OB either with a quick phone call or at your next visit.  I am sure that they would be able to offer some reassurance as well.

You are correct - the chances definitely drop once you see/hear a heartbeat.  GL!

  • Thanks, I already have a visit with ultrasound scheduled next thursday 12/3   so I am trying to relax and just take it one day at a time until then. I feel that the OB office is already tired of me, I am sure they are tired of getting my calls.

I am just gonna try to take it easy and drink lots of water and hope it is all normal.

  • The same thing is happening to me.  I am 7w 2d today with my first u/s sceduled for 12/3 as well.  I have not been to the Dr.'s yet and am freaking out a little bit.  I have talked to a nurse, who has said as long as it is brown and no cramping it is ok, but keep her updated.
  • from going through this myself and seeing a lot of women going through it on here, it surprises me how common it is. some people will tell you that not all spotting is normal (to scare you i think), but most is. i also went into the ER last week and they heard the heartbeat. nothing you can do now but try and relax (easier said than done), drink fluids, and focus on that little heartbeat you heard.

good luck at the ultrasound, it's going to go great!

  • i experienced this yesterday while at work and was freaking out a bit.  but my first appt is not until the 10th of Dec, so i was going a little crazy.  My plan is, if it happens again (knock on wood it doesn't), I am going to go to my doctor's.  Its just really nerve racking at the moment......
  • Yes, brown blood is very common and nothing to worry about.  I've spotted early on with both pregnancies and have a healthy little girl and everything looks good with this pregnancy so far.

Looks like we have the same due date and are going through the same thing with ultrasounds on the  same day. That is amazing.

In looking through the boards over the last few weeks this does seem to be a common occurance around this time in pregnancy.

Lets keep each other updated on our journeys. Good Luck!
