Any CA teachers? Come in please

Can anyone sum up the maternity leave (or lack of) we get as teachers in California? From what I've heard we get none. We have to rely on our sick/vacation pay. But then I've also heard we can continue to get paid but they take out what they have to pay the sub.  Is there a short term disability option for the first 6 wks? (but since we relinquish social security I would think we wouldn't have access to std...??)

Thanks if you can help give me an idea of what to expect :)

  • I think it depends on your district.  In my district, we get whatever sick time we have accumulated.  When you'r'e done with that, you g the get differential pay for the remainder of your disability (6 weeks).  This means that they pay the sub out of your check and then you get the rest.  We have the option to buy a disability insurance which makes up the difference.

Sounds about right.  You have to first exhaust your sick days before maternity leave kicks in.  If you had put money into disability every month this would help cover you every month.  I know a co-worker that got 70% of her pay while she was out.

  • as teachers we do not pay in to disability so we don't get that. I am hoping you have independent disability insurance through your union. I do. It is better than "differential pay" which is where you get your normal wage minus the sub pay.

You may take up to 4 weeks off prior to the birth. More if you have a doctor's note. The district (mine and most that I know of) start with your sick leave and comp time. I ran out of that at the beginning of November. When you run out they go to the differential pay or your disability insurance.

You have 6 weeks off after the baby is born. 8 weeks if it is a c section.  If you have a doctor's note it can be longer.

Beyond that you actually have more available but things start changing with regards to whether or not the district is paying your health care etc. The additional time is called FMLA.

I would advise you to meet with your human resources department. Take someone with you. Ideally a union rep. Figure out how long your sick leave will last and what your district's policy is.

  • Thank you! This helps A LOT! DH and I were researching it last night and realized we don't pay into std and we haven't signed up for an optional insurance policy for it! YIKES!
