My sister is about 7 weeks. She has been puking since Thursday non-stop. She can't keep anything down (and she is sick 24/7...not just in the morning). The one day she puked 10 times! She called the Dr. today and they told her to take unisom (apparently it is used for more things than just a sleep aid). They told her to call back on Wednesday.
I feel so bad for her. She is so upset and cries every time I talk to her b/c she can't take it anymore. She hasn't even been able to go into work.
I am hoping the Dr. calls in an Rx for her soon!
Did anyone have this problem? If so, what did you do for it? Is there anything besides a Rx that will help?
Re: Anyone very sick in 1st trimester?
I didn't have it that bad with DD. Ginger helps. She can boil fresh ginger to make ginger tea. Or eat ginger snaps. I bought some ginger chews (in different flavors) from a health store. She can also take B6, it's supposed to help with nausea. She might want to call her OB to ask how much she should take- too much can cause nerve problems. (I take 50mg with no problems).
Propel water also has B6 in it.
Tell her I feel her pain. I really really hope I don't get m/s with this pregnancy.
I did. At my worst, I threw up 7 times in 6 hours and couls not keep even water down. I would recomend her to ask her dr for either Zofran or reglan (although Reglasn has a habit of making you feel like you took a handful of Unisom)
My RE put me on Zofran that I took until I was 25 weeks. (I tried to go off it before then many times, but ended up right back over the toilet).
As we say in our house "Zofran is your friend".
Yes, I most definitely have! Last pregnancy I was exactly like you sister. I threw up in the morning before work, on the way, when I got there, throughout the day, and would go home at night lay in bed and just cry. I would say it was some of the darkest days of my life, my husband was working a lot, I was so sick I couldn't move, we were in the midst of moving and I had to pack, and I slipped into depression from it. I talked to my dr. and the prescribed Reglan, which did nothing for me. I had to power through it until 24 weeks pregnant
(( All worth it in the end but it was such an every day struggle. I feel so bad for your sister, thoughts and prayers to her. I hope it gets better for her.
This pregnancy I was in morning sickness HELL last week where I couldn't move from the bed to couch, and this week I'm still not feeling great but much better. Not sure if 2nd pregnancies are better about morning sickness or not but I'll take it! I know I'm not in the clear.......but better than last week!

Wow, I can't even imagine!
I hope you don't get so sick with this pregnancy! GL!
Thanks! I hope not too. Everyday I'm so nervous to even wake up, I keep having morning sickness flashbacks from last time. This will be the LAST pregnancy, my body doesnt' handle the 1st trimester well...............
I'm surprised they didn't make her go in for an IV. On day three I called and they made me go in right awayl. Mine was awful until almost the 3rd trimester with DD. My Dr. gave me a script for Zofran, but I just couldn't afford the dosage I needed, even after insurance, so I got Reglan instead. It helped me not throw up, but I still felt MISERABLE. I was really depressed because I felt awful all the time. This time my m/s was more mild and I felt fine w/ Reglan when I needed to take it.
Bad m/s SUCKS.
I've had it bad with both pregnancies. Make sure she doesn't get too dehydrated. If she can't drink or eat she should call them again and tell them that nothing is staying down. Going in for IV hydration would be good and then getting a prescription for zofran. I took zofran all through my last pregnancy and I'm still taking it with this one.
I hate that she's been that sick since last Thursday and they told her to wait until Wednesday to call back. It sounds like she's in bad shape and needs more than unisom.
I was nauseous 24/7, but fortunately not much puking. It lasted until 19 weeks, and I lost a lot of weight... not fun.
But my cousin is in the hospital right now at 20 weeks for hyperemesis... they've going to send her home eventually with an IV and a Zofran pump, but right now she's just too unstable. I had a friend who also dealt with hyperemesis and had to have a home nurse come every day. Some people have it really rough.
Yeah, I had severe hyperemesis and it was hell on earth lol. I puked at least 8x a day, with no relief until 30ish weeks. It was awful. I couldn't keep anything down, couldn't even smell or look at food or I would puke, etc. I landed in the hospital a few times for week long stays to get rehydrated and stable enough to go home. At 16 weeks I ended up with a picc line and a home health nurse who visited every 2 days. I used two IV bags a day to stay hydrated enough to be home and not in the hospital. I lost a ton of weight. It was seriously the worst time ever! I tried the same drugs most of these responders did...Zofran/Phenergen/Unisom and B6 etc. Nothing really worked, though Zofran did keep the puking to a minimum once I was like 25 weeks...I took it until 34 weeks.
Basically, it's horrible, but it's doable. I would do it again (and am planning on it!) in a heartbeat for my son. Just try to support her as much as you can. Clean her house for her maybe? Make meals for her husband/other kids if she has any. My doctor always told me that the moms are the ones who suffer with this, the babies generally do fine. My son was never compromised, and was born weighing 9lbs 12oz lol!
