EC check-in

In honor of the US Thanksgiving this week: For what aspect/benefit of EC are you most thankful?

Amazingly enough, I can also treat you with a EC and Thanksgiving related pic!

Re: EC check-in

  • I love that EC allowed me to realize how smart DD is! I never would have known how much she understands about the world and how she can think, even at five months old. She can't talk or even control her movements well enough articulate her idea or express her will, but EC has allowed us a little glimpse at her awareness.

  • i have a question and i hope you dont mind me asking but whats your work situation like?

EC sounds like something i would be interested in doing but both DH and I work full time so I dont think it would work for us

I actually do SAH right now (I was laid off and am looking), but there are working moms who do it. Hopefully one of them can respond! You definitely don't need to EC full-time. I didn't start out that way. Until recently we only put DD on the potty when she woke in the morning, before her evening bath, and a little more often on weekends. The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative by Christine Gross-loh is a great book if you're curious about occasional or part-time EC. Instead of the goal of being diaper-free, we focus on having DD retain her sphincter awareness and see that the potty/toilet is where to go.

  • We only part time (and just started this week!) EC but I would love to chime in!

I am thankful for the open-mindedness that EC has brought DH and I!  When we first heard about it in our home birthing class we thought it was intriguing but crazy!  After seeing two of our friends in the same class try this and succeed we started to research and developed a plan that works with our schedules and lifestyle.  Even though Sadie is still a newborn baby we have made the choice to try this out as it works for us!

I am thankful that we kept an open enough mind to try this even though it is only part time and she is so little!

  • This is a tough one for me to answer after the week that we have had...very frustrating...for some reason DS started arching his back and crying most of the time when we put him on the potty. Consequently, we have backed off a little because I don't want him to have negative associations with the toilet. Anyway, I haven't had a catch all week. Wah. :(

I guess I would say that I am thankful for EC because I believe that it has made me more aware of his needs in general. I think that it has helped me figure out what certain fusses mean, i.e. hungry, tired, uncomfortable, bored...

Even if you put your little one on the potty once a day it's time well spent.  Upon waking is always a great time - pretty much a guaranteed catch.  It gets them used to the potty and it starts teaching them that the toilet is the place to go to the bathroom, and a diaper is just a back up.

(and, um, do I smell a Morrissey fan?  Your screen name is telling me yes.)

As for what I'm thankful for?  I LOVED not having to change poopy diapers.  7 months was my last one, I think.  I didn't think I minded until I didn't have to do it anymore! lol.    Saving money was nice, too...  and seeing DD so pleased with herself was nice as well.  She loved her panties and she loved doing things 'right'.

I am so thankful for this too!  It has really opened my eyes to how smart DS is and how I really should not underestimate him.  I am also thankful that I have the opportunity to share this with other moms who have never heard about it.

To answer the question about working FT and EC, DH and I work FT and do EC part time.  1st thing in the morning is almost always a catch and DS is so proud of himself!  It's funny to see how he know what to do, even if he doesn't pee, he usually farts LOL so I know that he's trying to release something.  We do it a bit more frequently on the weekends when we're not running errands.  Like pp said, every positive experience on the potty is a success!  My goal for DS is for him not to be afraid of the potty like I've seen so many other kids be.  I want him out of diapers earlier than most (3-4 yrs) and he has shown me that he is capable and happy to go in the potty.

    Thanks!!!!

  • I am thankful for how it's brought us even closer together. It's so great to have another way to communicate with DS. The more the better! It totally feels like we are a team :).

I also thought EC was crazy talk when I was pregnant and never thought we'd end up doing it- but I think it's so natural & normal now. And easy! I'm thankful that it reminds me to keep an open mind!
