I need advice ... if you have dealt with thrush or yeast rash please come in!

Before I start, let me say that yeast is my nemesis.

DD has been dealing with a yeast rash and thrush for a week now.

She has a prescription for oral nystatin drops and a prescription rash cream that includes nystatin, hydrocortisone, aquaphor and something else.  So, we have been using Nature Babycare 'sposies for a week now.

I have bleached all my diapers and cloth wipes and they are ready to go for when we're ready to go back to cloth.  I am hoping to go back to cloth soon, but I am hesistant because her rash (although better) is still widespread and the prescription cream (which is not CD friendly) would get all over the diapers.. it's too big to cover with a liner.  I have purchased some GSE to add to the wash after we go back to using the CDs, and with the recommendation of Stephanie from Abby's Lane, we're going to use Corn Starch along with fleece liners to keep her skin dry.

I am boiling all my pump parts and bottles (since I just went back to work), and pacifiers daily. I am also washing all of DD's clothes and my shirts/bras/nursing pads in hot water with vinegar in the rinse (and I'm going to add GSE to the wash also).  Even more fun, we are throwing out any fresh milk that is not used or has gone bad since we cannot freeze anything that's potentially exposed to yeast.  *joy*

I am using an over-the-counter yeast cream after each time she nurses or I pump as well as changing my breast pads after every feeding/pumping.

What else do I need to do to help get this yeast gone and prevent it from returning?  When would it be safe to start CDing again?

How long should it be before I expect to see an improvement in the rash or thrush?

Please give me any extra words of wisdom or tips that I haven't asked for.  I don't want to ever have to deal with this again so I'm trying to do everything that I can to prevent it in the future!

TIA!

  • Sounds like you are doing an awesome job getting everything under control!!  Glad you talked to Stephanie too.  The only thing I can additionaly think of is using probiotics as a preventative measure now, and daily in the future.  You can take them yourself, and also give them to your DD.  THere are specific infant probiotics you can get.

You need more than cream on yourself imo. If you are not yet seeing an improvement. Call and ask for Diflucan for yourself and for DD. I do not mess around with yeast as I had it for 2 months. I am not joking one bit on that. I tried everything under the sun. Diflucan cleared DS and what worked for me in the end was being on Diflucan and putting a very diluted GSE/water mix on my nipples. I would ONLY do that if the Diflucan doesn't work by itself. The GSE burns!!!!!!! I was fed up though.

     Other things to try:
Eliminating sugars and simple carbs from your diet
Adding yogurt (plain) to your diet
Taking acidophilus (and letting DD suck a little from your finger)
    Continuing washing/cleaning/boiling everything

I feel you about the milk. I had to throw out what little I had and was very worried I wouldn't have anything for DS when I went back to work. GL!

  • Also, it should only a take maybe 2 days to start seeing improvement with any of those treatments (according to my LC).

  • sounds like you are doing a great job. I hate to tell you this, but the nystatin didn't cut it for us. we had to get oral diflucan (fluconazole) to rid my lo of the thrush. I was lucky enough, however, to not have a yeast rash!

  • like pp said, probiotics in your diet, and try eliminating yeast breads and minimize sugar. And some old-fashioned nakey time for both your nips and the baby butt should give you some relief... just turn up the thermostat a bit!

  • i don't remember if you mentioned this but I don't think so - boil any toys she puts in her mouth in a water/vinegar mix. If it can't be boiled but it could go in the wash do that - with the vinegar and GSE.
