Apparently I am in the minority of bw-ers. Semi-vent

There is a new store in one of our malls here that carries some cool baby items.  I went there because I heard they carry different carriers, and I am looking for a ring sling for quick trips.  Well, I asked the lady and she started talking to me about my baby, then asked if I was still bfing.  I had to tell her that didn't work out for us and she looked at me like I had two heads.  She said "Oh, I just assumed since you wear your baby."  Nope, and thanks for making me think one more time about how I feel inadequate because I couldn't get the whole bf thing to work.

  • You are not inadequate!  And she assumed.  She made an ass out of herself.

  • A lot of morons walking around out there...watch out!  ...this makes me think of a story my mom just told me.  My grandpa was nursed by a wet nurse when he was a baby because my great grandma couldn't get nursing to work--I think she had a difficult birth.  My grandpa is in his 80's so I think there wasn't formula back then.  You're a great mom--try not to let it get to you:)

  • Thanks for the encouragement!  I'm really sure she meant no harm by it.  And honestly, it probably more common amongst baby wearing moms.  You would think that after 9 months, I would be over this by now lol.  Just goes to show me once again that you have no idea what it will be like until you are there.  For having the thoughts that I would without a doubt bf, made it extremely difficult for me to.  Karma, or something.

  • I'm a BWer and havne't been able to nurse DD since she was 6 months old due to supply issues and I still get jealous of people who are able to nurse their children longer than I was able to.  It's not something that you need to "get over".  It was something that you felt very stronly about and weren't able to do.  You have a right to be upset.  It's ok.  You're a great mom and doing a great job!

I think this is very sage advice.  You need to mourn the experience you hoped to have.  I hope you do realize that you are a great mom, your baby is thriving and it doesn't matter how you guys got here.

  • First off- what mall? I'm in KC, I want to check it out!

Second, I'm sorry they made you feel bad! I went to a diaper swap not long ago and Em was NOT happy to be there. I was bouncing her up and down in the sling trying to calm her and a woman said, "You can latch her on if you want, I don't mind!" At the time, I was supplementing with an SNS and nursing was still a constant battle. While I appreciate what she was trying to do (let me know it was okay to NIP there), it made me feel awkward.

It's in the crappy Great Mall in Olathe.  It's across from the Carters outlet.  Cute store with some really cute things in there.  Unfortunately as far as carriers go though they only carry Moby wraps and something similair to that.  I was on the hunt for a ring sling and teething bling (which I found along with Sophie the giraffe.)

  • Have you been to Happy Bottomus in Lee's Summit? I bought my ring sling there. It's a WAHM made one, but it was 1/2 the price of a Maya wrap. I love it!
  • I have not but I believe I have heard of it.  Do you live over that direction?  I used to work in LS but hadn't heard of it before I switched jobs.

  • yup, I'm over on the MO side :) Happy bottomus is great! I go there way way too often.
  • That stinks that she said that. Maybe its just me but I would have never made any type of association with wearing your baby and breastfeeding.

I would have been really upset as well, my milk never came in and I was devastated.

  • People are dumb.  Sorry, man.
  • Was she asking because she wanted to make a comment about a product and it's ease for breatfeeding? Which t my mind is ok.

Or was she just making conversation. Still not awful, but the follow up statement was uncalled for.

  • Ugh - I'm sorry. I have no problems with the BFing area - but I can completely understand your disappointment. I went all out for natural birth in a birthing center complete with tub for the water birth of DD.  That is until DD decided that she changed her mind & didn't want to come out - "crawled" up to station -3 slightly transverse so that at hour 45 I was transferred to the  hospital & had her by c/s at hour 48.   Not how we had hoped she would come into this world - but, she's here & for that I'm grateful. - I'm still irked (yes, 18mos later), that my SIL had her baby in a birthing center, in the tub, just 45 minutes after arriving there.... and she only knew she was pg from 5mos on - and had never heard of a birthing center & water birth until we mentioned it to her (we did all research, etc.).   UGH.
