how to make yourself drink more water

so apart from half a cup of coffee most mornings, all i drink all day is water.  the midwife told me i need to be drinking at least 2 liters a day.  the water bottle i carry is just over 16oz.  typically i go through maybe two of these a day - if that.  so basically half of what i need to be taking in.  i was making a concious effort today to drink more and STILL just refilled it at 1:30.

anyone have any tricks to make myself drink and drink and drink?

eta: and to do it while at work and being busy doing stuff.  :-)

Re: how to make yourself drink more water

  • Make it a habit to take a few sips before you start a new task, or when you get off the phone, or check your e-mail, etc.

  • I force myself to finish my glass of water before I go potty.  Then, since the water cooler is on the way to the potty, I just refill on my way back.  It's a self-perpetuating cycle, if I just get started with it in the morning.
  • I time myself.  "I need to drink X glasses of water in X amount of time."  If the time has passed and I haven't finished my water, I chug.

  • I added Lemon EO or Cranberry Emergen-C.

  • Glue a water bottle to your non-dominant hand.  That's what it feels like I've had to do, anyway!

On a more serious note, I switched to a larger bottle - it holds 40 oz - and I make myself drink two a day.  I pee every 15 minutes as a result.  Also, my throat has also really been bothering me and if I don't take a sip literally every minute or two it hurts - it sucks as a singer, but it's great as a pregnant lady.

Not sure exactly what your work is, but can you try to take a big drink after every phone call, after you've typed x amount, etc.?  Or, if you won't completely annoy your co-workers, set an alarm so you take a drink every five minutes?

  • i put a big cup with a straw in it RIGHT in front of my keyboard.  then i sip while i type.
  • I've been having the same issues. With the busyness of work, it's hard to get more than 2 bottles of water down all day. So, I just make sure to drink 16 ounces with dinner and then another full cup that I try to drink before bed. This does make me get up more during the night to pee, but it makes me get in the amount I need!
  • How often do you pee?  When I was pg and peeing at least every hour, I would make sure to fill up my glass after every trip to the bathroom.  I would knock out my official requirement during my eight-hour work day, and everything else was just bonus.
  • Okay so I figured out yesterday that I am apparently drinking WAY more water than any other pregnant lady. I go through almost 200oz a day. I carry a water bottle with me at ALL times, seriously I freak if I dont have it. My bottle is a 32 oz model and I refill it like 5-6 times. Now granted I drank between 3 and 4 bottles before the prengancy. But I am just so thirsty all the time now.

I had to train myself to drink more water. I started with drinking about a 32oz bottle each day during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Once I got into this habit then it got easier and easier to drink enough water. So my advice is to try to force yourself to AT LEAST finish your 16oz bottle at each meal. So one with breakfast, one with lunch, and one with dinner. And then during the in-between times you can just drink when you are thirsty. Thats what I did to get into the habit of drinking water. And its a very good habit to start now, because even not pg you should be drinking lots of water.

  • Just think...staying hydrated keeps the Braxton Hicks away.  I don't care what anyone says sometimes they are downright uncomfortable!
