School me on back carries

I have a Babyhawk and the 2 times I have tried a back carry, it has ended up hurting my neck.  I think I lean forward too much and have a hard time relaxing while he's on my back.  Any suggestions on that?

Also, I tried to get him in a high back carry, but I don't think I succeeded.  I tied the tails just under my boobs.  Should I tie them above?

Thanks ladies!

  • I'm not much of a mei tai expert so hopefully someone else will jump in but...

In general, you want to make sure you have the carrier nice and snug - like he's molded to your back.  That should help with the need to lean forward.  If you are tensing because you are worried he might fall or something, I'm sure that's making it uncomfortable as well.

As for where to tie, it's really whatever is most comfortable.  You might try tying above your boobs and see if that makes a better fit.  This video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJsJ4z8WaCE - was helpful to me when I did a high back carry with my BH when kiddo was little.

Keep practicing - it gets much easier and will be second nature before you know it!

  • I tie mine above the boobs for a high back carry. I can't get it to work otherwise!

Thanks for sharing that link!  I didn't know to loop the ends threw the shoulder straps and across the chest.  That is a great tip!

  • Great video - But is that too high for a big'un like my DS? He's 10 months and 21lbs+. It's definitely comfy for me to have him in a regular mid-back carry, but he might enjoy seeing more of the world over my shoulder.

ETA: Geez, I mean my ELEVEN MONTH OLD. I can't believe how fast this year is going!

I know!  Kiddo will be 11 months in a few days Crying

I did a back carry in the babyhawk yesterday to show DH how to do it on his own - I didn't tie it quite as high on my body but kiddo was still able to see over my shoulder.  I think you can kind of play with it some to see what is most comfortable in terms of where you tie the straps.  You can definitely still do a high back carry - I do it all the time with wraps.
