We just started cereal yesterday and I am slowly introducing it, i.e. one meal at a time. Every week I plan on increasing it. I am not going to start foods until the beginning of the year only because he'll then be 6 months plus since we're traveling I really don't want the hassle of dealing with food and security at the airport just yet.
We started rice cereal once a day last week, and will bump it up to twice a day this week. He isn't eating much of it, but I tend to feed it after he has eaten a bottle so he probably isn't that hungry. Although we got the green light from the pedi, we don't plan to start solids till closer to 6 months. We may try oatmeal after we finish this box of cereal.
hopefully we get the ok to start at his appt tomorrow!!! If so then we are planning on starting on Thurs-to give him a couple days of recovery from shots...and of course, its Thanksgiving so i thought that was pretty sweet...

We are still giving ds cereal. In the morning he gets gerber rice with apple or mixed fruit cereal, for lunch he gets pureed homemade fruits or veggies and for dinner he gets rice, oatmeal or another form of cereal mixed with pureed veggies. I have heard cereal should be given all the way up to toddler age.

This. I was told that cereal has nutrients that are important for a baby to have, daily. We feed cereal along with a veggie or fruit for all three meals.
We started rice cereal after his 4 month well visit, since pedi recommended we start. Well, he just wasn't "getting it". He would stick his tongue out and out all the cereal came. Since I didn't want to force it (he wasn't ready yet IMO), I only tried once a day for a week. Then I stopped and tried again every weekend. He FINALLY just ate it all yesterday - he was actually swallowing it! YAY!
So starting today, I sent cereal to FIL's house (he watches him during the weekdays). He's going to feed him cereal at breakfast (1 tbls cereal mixed with 3 tbls formula) - and I will feed him oatmeal at dinner. I'm going to bake a sweet potato Thursday morning and bring it with us to my aunt's. So his first "real food" will be on Thanksgiving. I'm planning on doing a month of veggies, rice cereal and oatmeal before introducing fruits. I will most likely start fruits on Christmas day. That way it'll be easy for me to remember when he had his first veggies/first fruits. I will probably mix fruits with rice cereal or oatmeal once he's mastered them seperately. I don't think it's necessary though.
Re: How long did you/will you give LO cereal?
I never mix rice cereal with the baby food. Here is our schedule:
Breakfast: mush up half a banana and rice cereal (made with 2 oz of formula)
Lunch: one 4 oz container of baby food and graham crackers
Dinner: one 2.5 oz container of baby food and rice cereal (made with 2 oz of formula)
We started with just rice cereal for a month, then added a second meal including baby food and just recently started the third meal.
